Today we’d like to introduce you to Geneva Gordon.
Hi Geneva, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I danced professionally and played the cello from an early age which was the entry point to a vast amount of music. Fast forward to around 2013 when an opportunity to volunteer for my friend’s radio show on KPFT called, Blues in Hi Fi presented itself. I’m so grateful for that time because I was able to obtain more knowledge on how to host a show as well as representing the brand by playing my personal records out at bars. A few years later, I met my mentors DJ Baby Roo, DJ Melodic as well as Mike Criss who helped further my development as a DJ.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This hasn’t been easy but I am grateful for the challenges that were presented because it not only made me grow as an artist but as a person. As a self employed creative, I get to wake up every day sharing music that I love. It can be scary but it’s also so rewarding and fulfilling.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a DJ, music curator, and booking coordinator. I gravitate towards disco, boogie, and funk in my craft and I’m also very proud of that. I love to tell a story and take people on a journey during my sets that I hope resonates with the audience in a positive way.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I curate a playlist on Spotify. Every month, it’s a new selection of songs and it’s just another way for me to share music with people. It’s one of my favorite projects and it has been so rewarding and amazing to hear the impact it has made on others.
