Hi Heather, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
From educator to floral designer – sometimes, life takes us on unexpected yet incredibly fulfilling journeys!
After dedicating 17 wonderful years to the field of education, I found myself constantly daydreaming about a new passion: floral design. It’s funny how these ideas take hold of our hearts.
When our family moved back to the vibrant city of Houston after our 5-year adventure in California, I knew it was now or never to embark on this floral-filled path. As a hobby, I had always indulged in faux design work, creating beautiful pieces for my home and loved ones. It became an incredibly therapeutic activity, bringing me so much joy and peace.
But it was during my time in California, especially after the toll the pandemic took on my mental health, that I realized I needed to prioritize my happiness and follow my heart’s true desires. It was time to pursue something bigger and better.
So, I am embracing this new chapter of my life as a floral designer. I couldn’t be more excited to bring my love for flowers and my creative soul together in a career that fills me with immense fulfillment.
Remember, no matter where life takes you, there is always time to chase your dreams and find solace in the beauty surrounding us. Here’s to embracing the unknown and allowing our passions to bloom!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path to success is always challenging, and I have faced my fair share of challenges. But through perseverance and a willingness to learn, I have grown and flourished as a floral designer.
My first floral design job was a massive event with 65 tables – a daunting task for anyone, let alone someone new to the floral scene like me. I could handle everything on my own, so I struggled with time management and the sheer enormity of the task. However, I learned from my mistakes and have since adopted more efficient ways to process flowers and manage my time.
Another obstacle I have faced is showcasing my work, mainly because I needed a portfolio of images to pull from when starting out. But through weddings, events, and styled photo shoots, I have built a stunning portfolio highlighting my creative talents. Styled shoots, in particular, have been a great way to network and collaborate with others in the industry while also allowing me to showcase my floral designs in a specific theme or story.
Of course, I continue to face challenges daily, but I am excited to meet these obstacles head-on and grow even further as a floral designer. It’s all worth it to create stunning arrangements and designs that help make my client’s special occasions even more memorable.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
As a former teacher-turned floral designer, I have found that many of the skills I used in the classroom have proven to be instrumental to my success in the wedding industry.
One of the most important skills I have carried over from teaching is the ability to listen to my clients truly. Every wedding is unique, and I must understand my client’s vision, preferences, and budget to create the floral arrangements of their dreams. By being attentive and thoughtful listeners, we can provide honest suggestions and avoid making proposals that fall outside their budget.
In addition to listening, my logistics skills also come into play when preparing client proposals. After a detailed consultation, I consider all of their unique needs and develop a comprehensive proposal that includes images from their mood board and flower options in their chosen color palettes. By providing visual representations of our ideas, clients can better envision their wedding day and what their floral arrangements will look like.
I understand that flowers are a visual medium and that capturing the client’s vision is essential before any work begins accurately. That’s why at Fashionable Florist, we pride ourselves on delivering thoughtful and comprehensive proposals highlighting our clients’ unique styles and preferences.
