Today we’d like to introduce you to Iman Shakur.
Hi Iman, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, I was born and raised in New Orleans. I grew up playing sports and it was one of those things I felt like I had to do or was supposed to do. However, I always felt a special connection to the art of storytelling and art in general. That was my first love.
I spent my coming of age years trying to find my way as an artist in the insufferable Texas heat before God revealed to me what was always there, which was my innate ability to conjure up and be fully immersed into a story. Which perfectly aligned with what I was experiencing in that season of my life. I kept finding myself on different film sets before ultimately booking a small role in a big budget film starring Will Smith.
It all felt so divine and I give God all the glory for how my life has unfolded thus far. I knew at that moment that I’d better take this acting thing serious and that I have.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Again, it’s certainly been divine. But smooth? Not at all.
I’m in pursuit of mastery. That requires me to submit and commit myself to the process of repetitive failure. I am also under God’s will which requires patience. Nothing good comes easy.
My whole life, I’ve wanted to be great at something. On multiple occasions, I’ve wondered if I could live up to the fire that God has set ablaze within me.
Ultimately, there’s only one way to find out.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m in actor. Some may know me from Method, a psychological thriller that follows an actor whose aspirations blur the line between art and reality. Others may know me from my work on stage in the Houston area.
How do you think about happiness?
My happiness is sustained by the word of God where in Deuteronomy 31:6, he promises not to leave me nor forsake me. It’s a reminder that I’m never alone and that nothing is happening to me, but for me.
