Today we’d like to introduce you to James Russell.
James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is James Theodore Russell known to the world as JayT. I’m a Pop/R&B singer, songwriter, vocal producer, actor and director. I was born in Washington DC and I’m a Brooklyn native. I am the second-generation grandson of Liberia’s 10th President Alfred Francis Russell.
I hail from a musical family. My mother was a Hilltop Records songwriter. In fact, My sister sang background for Mary J Blige and many other artists. At the age of 11, I entered the music industry. I auditioned for “The Kids Star of Tomorrow” competition at The famed Apollo theater and won the Kids star of tomorrow. By the time I turned 12, I had already performed for over seven major labels.
Throughout my career I have amassed over 10 million streams, charted top 2 in the Philippines with my single “Thinking Bout You” and have been an opening act for artists such as Jesse McCartney, JoJo and PnB Rock.
Today, I became the First Liberian American Male Singer to have a Billboard in Times Square. I wrote and vocal produced on Hamilton Actress /Singer Meecah’s top 10 R&B album “Retribution”. I am gearing up to release a brand new EP “8” which is led by my current single “Fell in Love” written by myself and produced by Robin Wesley. The single has already amassed over 5.6 million streams across all platforms and has a huge music video dropping in the coming weeks.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been an easy road as an independent black artist. You have to be your own marketing team, production team, songwriting team and management. I wear many hats, but the greatest gift is the manifestations of all these ideas in my head that become songs that my fans tell me changed their lives. I lean on GOD and in return, I’m rewarded with prosperity.
Ownership over my music and masters are very important to me. Once the right major deal is presented, I’ll sign until then I’ll stay in the independent space which is currently thriving for artists like myself and Muni Long who has a top 20 pop record on her own label imprint.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Aside from being a successful singer/songwriter for myself. This year I began writing for other artists, which was different but very rewarding.
Outside of music, I have begun directing, producing and starring in major television productions that should be out later this year/ early 2023.
Any big plans?
In the coming months. I have a music video dropping in a REALLY dope way, my new EP “8” dropping and a new single from the project coming as well. All while filming for television. Very exciting times!
