Daily Inspiration: Meet Jamie Perry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Perry.

Hi Jamie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began playing Violin at five years old. God was gracious enough to gift me with incredible parents who encouraged me and supported me from the beginning by enrolling me in Violin Classes at Parker Elementary School here in Houston. I continued my training through Middle and High School (Johnston MS and HSPVA), where I obtained a large sum of my training through Private Lessons and participating in Orchestral Programs in and outside of school. After graduating from High School, I was afforded the opportunity to study abroad at The Royal Academy of Music in London, England, where I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Violin Performance. I Graduated and moved back to Houston in 2018, where I then began performing at the Professional Level. God opened doors for me to begin playing at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, teaching Orchestra at Booker T Washington High School, playing individually, and collaborating with multiple artists here in the city and abroad. It has been an incredible journey so far!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely been an interesting journey. At the beginning, I struggled with self-acceptance. It was very rare to see and African American Female playing the Violin and I felt my difference in the community; however, God used my Unique Gift to open doors that were foreign to other people. As my passion for music grew, so did the respective challenges (practicing long hours, having to miss out on social events because of Musical Engagements, being disciplined at a young age, etc) but, looking back, I can say that each step was worth the sacrifice. God allowed All Things to work together for My Good.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Violin Performance. I am known in the city as one of the few String Players who is able to collaborate in multiple Music Settings. I am most proud of being able to be malleable when it comes to my artistry. I believe that my desire for excellence, musically and otherwise, sets me apart and will always give me the push I need to be successful.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
The Bible has been the most helpful book I have continued to read. It has definitely shaped the foundation of my art and my personal standards. I enjoy reading anything that will enrich the mind, including essays or entire pieces of literature (I’m a definite nerd). Reading Music, as stereotypical as that sounds, has helped me do my best, as it adds on to my training as a Violinist. Listening to different artists and different genres of music has always helped shape my Ear for music as well and opened doors to many different styles and eras of Music, which adds inspiration to my journey.
