Daily Inspiration: Meet Jennifer Harkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Harkins.

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I never knew I wanted to own my own business until I was nearly 40! Fitness was a major part of my life growing up and I always loved connecting with and motivating others. After I had my two boys, this profession fell into my lap and I couldn’t be more thrilled with where I am right now.

I just launched two Mōtiv Fitness studios in Houston (Tanglewood & West U). Mōtiv Fitness is a new independent, boutique fitness brand, that welcomes all ages and abilities, and genders. I did this alongside 7 other woman from around the country who knew the fitness business model had changed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As recently as February 2021, a Federal Reserve Bank study noted that 30% of U.S. small businesses are still at risk of closing for good this year and we did not want to be among that statistic. Creating this brand with seven other women who are all opinionated and passionate about their studios in other markets was challenging, but somehow we all found common ground. Since we all are in different parts of the country, Zoom was instrumental for us. We were on calls early in the morning, late at night, in carpool lines and sometimes our kids’ activities!

We are thrilled that the launch was successful and now we can sit back and focus on the clients inside our own studios.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We offer unique classes, led by top-notch instructors, within a community that is truly committed to each other. Many of our team members have worked together for 10 years or more. We are invested in each other’s lives, and we are invested in our client’s lives outside the studio. Many times we go to lunch, dinner or even travel together! We want our environment at Mōtiv to be welcoming, and inclusive for all.

For me personally, I love to teach. I love to inspire others about how physical activity not only makes you stronger physically but it makes you feel better mentally. I enjoy pushing clients slightly past their comfort zone to show them…YES YOU CAN! They can push a little harder for 15, 30, 45 seconds and the benefits are tangible.

I teach a variety of class types. Barre, Cycling, Trampoline and I am not sure if I have a favorite. All of them are great for different reasons and the fact I don’t teach one specific style gives me a variety that I need to keep things interesting!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Of course, my husband and two boys are my greatest loves, but what makes me happy is giving our clients the chance to make themselves feel good physically and mentally. That way, they are better parents to their own children, better partners, bosses, employees, students, teachers, you get the point. If we physically feel better- we are happier.
