Daily Inspiration: Meet The Lagoons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Selan.

Hi Joey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My brother Ryan and I have been playing music since we were little kids. We grew up playing in our school jazz band and eventually began writing our own music. I went to school at UT Austin where I fell in love with the live music scene. I became more and more passionate about making a career in music and convinced Ryan to move out to Austin once I graduated. That’s when The Lagoons officially formed. We started recording some demos and uploaded them to SoundCloud. We decided to invest and professionally record a few songs at 512 Studio in Austin. This round of songs ended up becoming Gems EP and included our song “California”. “California” started gaining traction in the blog world and via Spotify editorial playlists. Since then, we’ve released two studio EPs, one studio album, and our sophomore album will be dropping on January 7th.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Over the last 5 years, the music industry has changed rapidly. We were fortunate to have pretty immediate success for our first release “California” but we’re still always trying to find creative ways to market our new music. It seems like every day there’s a new social media platform to take advantage of or some other type of hurdle to overcome but these challenges are what also make this job so fun and interesting.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My brother Ryan and myself make up the indie duo The Lagoons. We’re based in Los Angeles where we write, produce, and record music out of our home studio. Our 2016 single “California” has over 50 million streams on Spotify and has had placements in Netflix’s series “Easy,” a BMW ad with Kate Upton, a Seiko Australia ad, and featured on product placement in Bose stores worldwide.

We’ve completed two national headline tours with support from Tim Atlas and Future Generations and have a vibrant live set consisting of both live looping and electronic elements along with a live drummer. Our versatile ability to switch between instruments as well as perform a completely fresh and different set each night sets our show apart.

Our catalog has received rave reviews from tastemakers and fans. In addition to being added to over 100k Spotify playlists including editorials such as New Music Friday, Ultimate Indie, Essential Indie, Hanging Out and Relaxing, Indie Rock Road Trip, The Ones That Got Away, Late Night Vibes, and more, NPR has included The Lagoons in their Heavy Rotation for “10 Songs Public Radio Can’t Stop Playing” along with Song Of The Day. Our debut album Midnight Afternoon was released in Summer 2020 and our sophomore album “Daybreak” is set to be released in January 2022.

Any big plans?
We have a new album “Daybreak” coming out on January 7th which we’re very excited to release. We also will be introducing some other new music in 2022 that we’re very excited to share.
