Daily Inspiration: Meet Johnnard Harper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnnard Harper.

Hi Johnnard, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Started working at Memorial Herman Hospital. One of my best friends Cedric Landers convinced me at the time to go to school with him. Take a few acting classes at HCC. I finally did, we both were in school taking classes. My other buddy Sergio Leroy told me about writing films and producing. So he taught me all the basics of filmmaking because he was already doing it. I became very interested in it. I began watching YouTube videos, using google and looking for free jobs to volunteer and get some experience. Worked as Production Assistant. Afterwards, I started to do short films. I did a few films for the Splatterfest competition. Where you had to make a film in 72 hours. I then decided to make a film called Bloody Mary. A feature found footage. Immediately afterwards, Jonathan Milton and I begin to work on several films. That’s where I learned First Assistant Directing, Producing and etc. Those were my first paying jobs. After working a few years with him, we decided to breakaway and I began doing my own films. Writing, directing, Dp, editing and etc. I did My biggest fan, hood fetish, Induced and currently in pre-production of Bruised. So far I’ve been doing this for over 10 years and worked on over 30 films.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has definitely not been a smooth road. Especially trying to balance a family, work and a film life. After losing my job at the hospital where I worked almost 15 years, It forced me to adapt and become a full time filmmaker. I’ve been doing this full time without any regrets. The hardest part of this is finding Money to make films, everything else after that at least for me is pretty simple and smooth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Filmmaker. I write, direct, Dp, edit and everything else for films or television. As far as writing, I write mostly horror and thriller films. I normally write with my writing partners. Denisha Hardeman and Anthony Leone. I’m beginning to dabble in writing comedy films. I’m mostly proud of being able to connect different people and bringing people together to make good films. I went from doing this solo to now having a group of very talented people to work with it. I’m proud of my growth and my team’s growth.

What sets me apart is my dedication and loyalty. No matter what set or who set, I’m always helping and being able to bring value. I’m a creator and love working with people. For me it’s not about the money, it’s about make a great project that we all can be very proud of.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Hard work, dedication, patience, being able to listen and take directions is very important to my success.
