Daily Inspiration: Meet Kendraya Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendraya Davis.

Hi Kendraya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since I was a little girl, I remember always having an interest for fashion and design. I loved the fact that fashion and clothing was a way for me to express myself without even having to speak. As I got older, I discovered my love for art and I became obsessed with creating meaningful pieces. I wanted so bad to be able to share my love for art and clothing with the world. I wanted everyone to empowered when they wore my designs. So the idea of putting my art on clothing just made sense. My graphic tee line is an extension of myself. It embodies pain, self-love, authenticity, uniqueness, freedom, mental health, and black empowerment.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I’m still trying to figure out ways to market and get my products out to my desired audience. As well as finding a good business strategy. At times I have been discouraged with my progress, I feel as though I should be farther along than I am. Sometimes I get frustrated in the designing process and question whether people are going to be drawn to my designs. But I realize that I have to have patience with myself and my journey. Things will fall into place.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Before I am anything, I am me. But I am also a college student and a business owner. I am a creative in every sense. My motto is “I am art.” I am an artist in every way, shape and form. I believe that everything I do is art or expression. From the way, I carry myself to how I speak or wear my hair. I think what sets me apart from others is my passion, imagination, resilience, and drive. My creative ideas are never-ending. I’m always thinking about the next best thing. I am the most proud of taking the initiative to create and start my own business all by myself. I am the creative team, the website manager, the social media team. I am very proud of all of the work I’ve done so far and can’t wait to see what else is in store for me.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think when it comes to luck in my life and business, I wouldn’t necessarily say I’ve had good or bad luck. I would say that I have experienced highs and lows. Definitely more highs than lows. But without the lows, without those hard times, I wouldn’t be where I am today. At times when I experience lows, I get discouraged just like anybody else would. I’ve had to learn that it’s okay to experience lows; what’s not okay is to dwell in that place for too long. My goal is to get to the top, so figuring out how to transform a low into a high is the best thing that I know to do.
