Daily Inspiration: Meet Kimberly Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Williams .

Hi Kimberly , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started working in the fashion industry in 2013 as a boutique owner and wardrobe stylist. As most of my clients were plus-sized (over size 12), I became extremely frustrated with the options and limited sizing in most department stores. The industry as a whole has improved but just five years ago it was extremely frustrating to dress a client with such scarce options. I designed a few pieces of clothing here and there but I never saw myself creating designs for my customers.

In 2017, I closed the boutique and started researching fabrics and patterns that I wanted to create. In 2019 I was introduced to my partner who resides in Lagos, Nigeria. We video chatted, created pieces, and she would send every garment to me in America for approval. We did this for six months before I took my first trip to Lagos. From there La Forme Clothing & Accessories was born. Immediately upon arrival we fabric shopped, finalized designs, and scheduled a photo shoot in just two short weeks.

January 2020 we released the initial designs and the reception was amazing! Two months later the pandemic hit and as we began our lockdown journey, orders became non-existent. Restrictions began to lift and we experienced some increase in sales but it wasn’t the strong launch that we hoped for.

Even with our new normals consumerism has increased and clothing sales are better than ever. As we were short-stopped with our initial launch, La Forme deserves a re-branding moment that will allow potential customers to get a proper introduction. We are very excited about our re-release in November 2021 and what’s to come as we expand our marketing reach and target markets. The initial designs were focused on resort and leisure wear and while our newest collection offers the original aesthetic, we’ve also designed pieces for nighttime activities when you want to put on heels and go out.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The pandemic absolutely affected our proper introduction and marketing efforts. Financially we struggled to stay afloat and then in October 2020, during the Nigerian Sars police protests, we lost a shipment valued over 5k. To still have the creative desire to keep going after a loss that expensive is indicative of how much I love to create.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for being stylish and having a true love for fashion. In my eight years in the industry I’ve worn many hats but designing is where I’ve felt most creative. My second love is wardrobe styling and although I’m stretched to capacity time wise, I still style and work with a few key clients that won’t let me go lol.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
A strong faith & believing in yourself is KEY. Positive Affirmations are essential. Self-care and filling your cup consistently is extremely necessary. Lastly, being surrounded by genuine vibes is a must for me. If you don’t clap the loudest when you see me win then I re-evaluate where our friendship or relationship truly stands.
