Daily Inspiration: Meet La Tanya Hubbard

Today we’d like to introduce you to La Tanya Hubbard.

Hi La Tanya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born on the 4th of July to an ex-Black Panther (Mother) and a Vietnam special forces veteran (Father), I told myself if I ever told my story that, I would start it with that sentence. I was born to a family who believed in service. I am also a granddaughter of a World War II veteran and a great-granddaughter of a World War I veteran – I am proud of that legacy. I am the first woman in my family to serve in the military. GO NAVY!!!

Serving my community was never taught to me. However, I watched my grandmother serve her community. I saw how everyone respected and loved her. She would pray with, and for everyone she met.

I was never taught how to be strong. I watched how my mother struggled. However, she always had laughter in her heart. She could move mountains with her voice, a smile, and a pot of gumbo.

I was never taught self-care; I watched how my stepmom worked out to those Jane Fonda videos, always took her time with her make-up and in getting dressed. She was always fly.

I was never taught unconditional love. I watched my aunt love on everyone. Her home was always open, plus she never judged anyone for their past.

Those four women inspired me to be better and to use my superpower for good. I know it is corny to use the word superpower, but I just don’t have a better word to describe it. My superpower is connecting with people. I am blessed to be able to help the two groups of people who pull on my heartstrings: veterans and seniors.

Through my employment with Advocate Health Advisors, I partner with Medicare brokers who help seniors/Medicare-eligible people and veterans understand how to navigate Medicare. I advocate for brokers, the individuals eligible for Medicare, and veterans.

My goal is to teach my children and grandchildren to be of service through my own actions. And I hope they are watching me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has never been a smooth road. I struggled and still struggle with my military experience. The values I learned in the Navy keeps me pushing. However, the things I endured hindered me. I was looking for structure in a world with no structure. I struggled with the labels placed on insurance agents. The bad actors make it hard for those who will do the right thing every time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am proud that I get the opportunity to help people understand Medicare. I am employed by Advocate Health Advisors, a veteran-owned, national field marketing organization. My title is Regional Manager; however, I don’t manage agents. I partner with agents to start, maintain, and/or grow their book of business by doing the right thing for their communities.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I want the readers to know that there are real local Medicare brokers who are knowledgeable, honest, and trustworthy.
