Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawrence Gulliver.
Hi Lawrence, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Before barbering, I was working at T Mobile while pushing my clothing brand, even getting booked at colleges to showcase it, but I realized I needed more income to fund it. A barber friend showed me the opportunity in barbershops, and since I already admired the artistry behind a good fade, I became an apprentice, eventually going full time within a year and a half. Over the next two and a half years I built a loyal clientele, always putting in extra hours studying on YouTube to sharpen my craft. When COVID hit New York, I kept cutting hair safely out of my apartment to keep the bills paid. A friend living in Houston told me the city was still largely open, so I flew down, met a downtown shop, and after a quick trip back to New York, moved to Houston for good. About a year and a half later, I started a food truck business with my family, which ran for three and a half years before we parted ways. During that time, I built an ecosystem combining barbering, club promoting, and the food truck, so clients could get a haircut, a night out, and a late night meal all through me. After four years at the barbershop, I branched out on my own and now run my own suite, growing my business with new systems and a strong network.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road for me. Landing in Houston with no clientele, I had to quickly adapt to a completely different set of cutting styles and standards than what I knew in New York. I also didn’t have reliable transportation early on, at one point even riding a bike to work in the heat just to make it in. I relied on Ubers and had to constantly find my way, often stepping way outside my comfort zone. Those early struggles pushed me out of my comfort zone, but they built the grit that helped me keep growing in Houston.
