Daily Inspiration: Meet Leidy Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leidy Torres.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started when I began serving at my local church at the age of 18. I really enjoyed working with children, but I was already studying international relations in Mexico. After finishing my degree, I went to work in the United States for three years as a teacher’s assistant, and that’s where I realized I wanted to be a teacher. However, for other reasons, I continued working in a completely different field until eight years later when I returned to the United States and had the opportunity to work as a bilingual teacher for two years. When I couldn’t renew my contract, I decided to open my own home-based daycare. I not only want to have the opportunity to teach and care for children, but also to create a place where children feel loved and safe, and where parents can have complete peace of mind knowing that their children are well cared for.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Before deciding to open my home daycare and work as a teacher, I remember being worried about finding a job. I went to more than 20 interviews, many of them far from where I lived, and there was a time when I was just praying to God for a job where I could give my best and at the same time be close to my daughters. Then one day I decided to look for a job in the area where I felt most comfortable, which was working with children. My first job was as a teacher’s assistant, and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to continue on this path.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Meeting such well-prepared and professional teachers has inspired me and given me reasons to prepare myself and be better at what I do. Children are the most vulnerable and important people, and that motivates me even more to give my best.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Every weekend my dad would take us to the skating rink and I really enjoyed those family moments. I also really liked participating in school dances when there were assemblies for some celebration.
