Today we’d like to introduce you to Liam Skites.
Hi Liam , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Wow! Thank you guys so much for having me! Hey, it’s Liam Skites, and I am a creative. I’m currently completing this interview with my mom while simultaneously getting ready to make content, and she still can’t fathom the idea of me being called a creative, haha. What can I say? “I Am New Gen.” Sorry, let’s start, shall we?
To begin, my story really started with art. As a kid, I was always drawing, painting, and creating things. Over time, that creativity evolved. Art turned into writing, writing turned into creating content, and eventually, that led me to music, which has always been a part of me, just unlocked in different stages of my life. Each gift became another way for me to express myself and connect with people, which I believe has always been my purpose.
Growing up, I didn’t always have the easiest time expressing myself, so art became an escape from the “real world”—a way to make sense of and rationalize what was going on in this huge, complex brain of mine. Looking back, I think that’s why creativity became such a big part of who I am and why I strongly believe my purpose is to create.
As an ’04 baby, I’ve been creating since I came out the womb. But it wasn’t until February 2019, when my life did a whole 360, when I uploaded my first silly video on TikTok. It did numbers that my 15-year-old self couldn’t fathom. That’s when I realized I had a creative voice worth taking seriously. I decided to hone in on that voice and start building myself as the “brand” that some people now know as Liam Skites.
Since then, I’ve grown and changed a lot, but at my core, I’m still that young, weird kid who loves to create and can’t be put into a box. And that’s okay.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, and honestly, it still isn’t. Sadly, the journey to success can feel very unsuccessful at times, haha. All jokes aside, some of my biggest struggles have been with public scrutiny—being judged, being perceived, and constantly wondering how people will interpret what I create. I don’t know who would willingly want to be in those shoes 24/7, but I guess that’s what I signed up for.
Being a Black man who’s passionate about art, music, and creativity instead of fitting into traditional expectations comes with its own challenges. For a long time, I found myself changing or shrinking parts of who I was just to please other people. Eventually, I had to realize that I’m just one person doing this thing called life, just like everyone else. And it’s okay to be human, guys… we’re allowed to be human.
Every creative path I’ve taken—whether it’s content, music, or art—comes with its own obstacles, but I’d like to think those experiences have taught me to stay true to myself. At the end of the day, I just want to love God, love people, and create. I feel like that’s something the world could use a little more of these days.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Now we’re talking, haha! Being a creative entails a lot, so I’ll be diligent but brief and try to be as efficient as possible.
As of now, I primarily create music and content. I’ve been locked in those areas more as the world evolves because, well, the starving artist is still starving! I’ve learned that sometimes you have to adjust with the times and focus on different parts of yourself and your creative abilities at different stages. I spent years pushing my paintings and artwork, and while I’m still proud of that part of myself, it wasn’t necessarily what people on social media connected with the most. I had to learn the hard way that sometimes you have to pivot and explore another lane.
That led me to lock in more with music and singing. I’m a theater kid at heart, and I’ve always loved singing—whether it was at church, in school plays, or just because I felt like it. I’ve also always loved writing. I eventually discovered through friends that I could create music independently, and I’ve been doing that for the past four years. Being inspired by pop stars throughout history has helped me develop my voice. I’ve learned how to stack vocals, hit high notes, and, not to toot my own horn, create some of the craziest harmonies that even shock me sometimes. When I’m able to turn the experiences I feel into music, it genuinely heals me, whether I’m singing about getting over a breakup or sipping a cold glass of “Sugar Honey Iced Tea”—pun intended, haha. It all solidifies a huge part of my world.
As of late, the music scene has become very oversaturated, and the game has gotten harder. So now I’m building my own world through content. I started taking YouTube and social media more seriously this year, and thank God, it has grown tremendously. I’ve built a community of over 15,000 subscribers on YouTube, and the SkiteyVerse is stronger than ever. Whether I’m posting drawing content, releasing a new song, or sharing a quick funny thought, I want to create things that make people smile, give them an escape, or simply make their day a little better—just like other creators and musicians have done for me.
I think that’s what truly sets me apart. I’m not trying to be just one thing. I’m building an Empire that’s meant to be a beacon of love and light—a place where all of my creative sides can exist together and where people who are just like me can feel seen. I believe God’s creation was never meant to be boxed in. Light can’t be contained, and neither should we. If my work can remind someone of that while giving them a reason to smile, then I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to do. And that… I am proud of.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’d like to think luck exists, but honestly, my brain just can’t fathom it. I don’t really believe things happen by coincidence. I believe everything happens for a purpose or a reason. God has a plan—a pretty gnarly one sometimes, haha—but nonetheless, He has a plan.
What’s for you is for you, and it cannot miss you. No matter how hard you try to fight it or run from it, what’s meant for you will find you. So whether something feels like good luck or bad luck in the moment, I close my eyes, pray, envision the outcome I’m hoping for, and, in my own way, manifest it. Then I just try to trust and believe that it’s all part of the journey.
