Daily Inspiration: Meet Liane Long

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liane Long.

Liane Long

Hi Liane, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story began during the pandemic while working in heart transplant. I needed something to relieve the stress of going into work every day being fearful of not only getting COVID-19 but also bringing it home to my family. I decided to make a candle that resembled a latte drink one day just for fun but realized when I burned it, there was no smell although I had added fragrance oil during the mixing process. I just had to figure out why there was no smell so, I did some research and decided to make another candle to feed my curiosity. I didn’t realize the amount of science and math it takes to make a candle, but after I did, I fell in love with it!! Making candles provided me with a mental escape from all of the stress and fear at work, even if it was just for a few hours. I felt if making candles is such a happy place for me, I’m sure they’d be a happy place for my customers. Some of my customers have told me that my candles remind them of things from when they were kids. Some have said my Male Ego candle reminds them of a fragrance their husband wears, and some love my Sea of Linens candle that reminds them of clean laundry. I enjoy hearing all of the happy memories my candles bring to those who purchase them. The more people love my candles, the longer I will continue to create them. Putting a smile on someone’s face because my candles remind them of a happy time is the ultimate reward for me.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Ha! Absolutely not! The first struggle for me was the wick testing. I had no idea that there were so many different types of wicks and depending on which wax you use the candle may not burn correctly. I spent months buying and testing different wicks, which became very frustrating to say the least. However, I finally figured it out, and the road was smooth sailing until it wasn’t. Just when I was getting into the groove of things, my second struggle occurred, and I started to not feel so well. I had worked with heart patients for almost ten years, but I never anticipated being on the other side of that. I ended up having emergency heart surgery, which halted everything. Leading up to my surgery, the experience was a challenge because my heart was beating at dangerous rate. Needless to say, I wasn’t really concerned with making candles or doing anything for months. Eventually, I got back to doing what I love!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I mentioned before, I worked in heart transplant for almost 10 years but recently transitioned to pediatric renal transplant. I’m mostly known for being focus-driven to make sure the patients get what they need. I am known for figuring out more efficient ways to arrive at the same outcome. I’m most proud of starting my own business and sticking with it despite all of the obstacles and naysayers. I’m also proud of the work I’ve done and continue to do in the healthcare field. What sets me apart is my tenacity and eagerness to be proactive in everything I do. Being prepared is one of my strengths.

What are your plans for the future?
My plan is to grow my business, expand into other entities making it financially possible to work my business full-time. With God’s grace, I pray that will happen after my last baby graduates from high school in a couple of years.
