Today we’d like to introduce you to Malevolent The Psycho Ghoul.
Hi Malevolent, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Malevolent was first conceptualized in 2017 because I absolutely love the Japanese subculture style of Shironuri and Visual Kei. I grew up admiring bands like Malice Mizer, DIR EN GREY, The GazettE, Moi Dix Moi dix mois, etc. and each one of these bands had their own style and it was such an influence on Malevolent’s creation. I was finally able to bring Malevolent to the stage in July 2021 where I first debuted at Pearl Bar in a AFAB friendly show called Kings of Houston. Because Ian, the show director, held a space for AFAB performers I had a fairly easy start up in performing along side Drag Performers. Up until then I never thought I would be sharing the stage with the very people that I would be amazed and entertained by. I’ve been performing up to present day. As an alternative performer in the very Glam heavy Houston scene, I’m glad I have been given chances to perform and not completely fall to the wayside. Entertainers like Blackberri, Preston Steamed, Regina Thorne-DuBois, Carmina Vavra, Luna of the Lilies, Annalee Naylor and Juecee have been given me a platform still and I truly appreciate them all so much for allowing me to reach a stage and not have to fully turn to internet drag just yet!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it has been a bit of a rocky road after Kings of Houston ended. Again, being an alternative performer, already makes it a bit difficult to get on stages, and add to that being AFAB can also make it challenging.
I know I can thrive in another city or state and maybe I will whenever I move from Houston, but Houston is still my home and even though it is a struggle, I still love it and will never stop doing what I do.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Malevolent the psycho Ghoul is a ghoul from Jupiter who specializes in spook and raw emotion. I am known for my expressive face, my make up style and energy. I’m proud that I can be versatile, but mostly that I’m not afraid to speak on political topics on stage, which I think also sets me apart. I’d like to make a difference and speak up. I want people to know that I am an ally and a safe person despite my name sake.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My sincerity, when it comes to political or difficult topics, my ability to emote and my humbleness.
