Today we’d like to introduce you to Matilda Marie.
Hi Matilda, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I began my journey in the field of beauty and aesthetics during my time at Dwight D. Eisenhower High School. Even back then, I found joy in grooming my friends’ eyebrows and providing makeup services for both my friends and relatives. It was during this period that I realized my true passion lay in becoming an esthetician. Despite juggling odd jobs and attending college full-time, I made the firm decision to pursue my dream, fully aware of the sacrifices it would entail. While my ultimate goal was to become a makeup artist, obtaining a license was crucial to solidify my expertise and allow me to practice in a salon setting.
The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic presented a unique opportunity for me to further expand my skill set. Drawing from the experiences of my teenage years, where my older sister and I would style each other’s hair, I recognized that I possessed the necessary skills to become a hairstylist. As production gradually resumed during the pandemic, I found myself offering styling and touch-up services on set. The changing dynamics of the industry led to a demand for makeup artists with hairstyling skills, prompting me to embark on a new educational journey. Despite the challenging circumstances, I attended school diligently, dedicating myself to a full-time course for three months. Wearing double masks, I successfully completed the natural hair and wig-making license, enhancing my capabilities in the field.
Today, I stand proud of my accomplishments because I never allowed adversity to deter me. Regardless of the obstacles that surfaced along my path, I maintained an unwavering commitment to persevere, no matter how long it took to reach the next milestone. This unyielding determination can be attributed to my spirituality, unwavering dedication, relentless focus, and the unwavering support of the people who love and believe in me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Throughout this journey, there is one thing that has remained consistently flawless—my skin. From an early age of 12, when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease impacting my kidneys, I knew that challenges lay ahead. The immediate consequence was being cut from the girls’ basketball team, which made it evident that my life had taken an abrupt turn.
In the face of adversity, I found solace in focusing on hair, skin, and nails—areas where I could excel. Just as I was on the verge of completing the required hours to become an esthetician, with only 14 hours remaining, I received an urgent call to the hospital due to stage 5 kidney failure.
In 2008, I underwent my first kidney transplant. However, in 2012, a devastating car accident resulted in the loss of the transplanted kidney, as it was unable to recover from the trauma despite the doctors’ desperate efforts.
Even during full kidney failure in 2013 a second time, I persevered and completed my required hours to become a licensed esthetician. I consistently pursued further education in makeup and made sure to stay up to date with the evolving trends in the beauty world.
Finally, on September 12th, 2022, I received my second kidney transplant after enduring a nine-year wait. During this period, I not only survived the pandemic, having contracted COVID-19 once, but also experienced the sudden passing of my mother last year on January 4th.
All these trials and more occurred while I was studying for state board exams, freelancing, and frequently going in and out of the hospital. It has been a whirlwind, but each experience has shaped me into the person I am today.
I am proud to hold two state licenses, which I dedicate to my late mother, who was also a hairstylist. Her unexpected passing in 2022 has further fueled my drive to succeed.
I am fortunate to collaborate with incredible local designers and creatives. Life presents difficult situations, but it is my response to these challenges and the unwavering support of my loved ones that have determined my personal strength.
Since 2008 to 2022, I have recognized and embraced the fact that my life would be different after dialysis. I made it my mission to prepare for the life I desired after dialysis treatment. Dialysis is a difficult process, but I accepted what I couldn’t change and prepared for better and brighter days.
Over the past decade, while working on various sets, I have been in renal failure. I have taken careful care of myself, resting whenever possible, and selecting work that aligns with my physical capabilities. Striking a unique balance has been essential while changing my entire lifestyle.
Although a kidney transplant isn’t a cure but a treatment, it brings its own set of challenges. Nevertheless, I am grateful for every aspect of my journey. I have learned to take life one day at a time, cherishing each moment.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a professional makeup and hair artist, I have continued to develop my skills in HD makeup for film and television, beauty makeup, and the art of creating a natural, no-makeup look. Currently, I am pursuing studies in theatre and special effects, with future plans to delve into the field of wig construction and other related areas.
I’ve contracted and worked on some of the most notable TV sets we all know and love, from Hulu to Peacock. I’ve contributed to documentaries for gold medalist Natasha Hastings and worked on many small films with local talent.
The same unwavering determination I apply to my health extends to my business and every facet of my life, except when it comes to romantic endeavors—there, I have no hesitation in quitting when it doesn’t align.
Amidst the hurdles I have faced, I take immense pride in my accomplishments and my ability to contribute my time and expertise to local charities and collaborate with fellow creatives. Mentoring others has been a source of great joy for me, and I am also thrilled about the development of my own products. In fact, I dedicated one particular product to my late mother, who encouraged me to bottle it.
I want people to recognize that irrespective of the challenges or ease encountered while running a business or being part of an organization, it is crucial to persevere and maintain a positive mindset. Transform your passion into your purpose, for there are individuals who are observing and appreciating your journey.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
What may surprise my family is that: I’m really funny and I love to write jokes.
What may surprise my friends: my name, Matilda Marie comes from two women in my life that I love dearly. My great grandmother Matilda C. and my Great Aunt Marie. It’s my honor to carry their names with pride and joy!
