Daily Inspiration: Meet Meghan Orr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Orr

Hi Meghan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since I was a child, I have always been drawn to design (color, form, texture, spatial planning, etc.) Growing up, my family traveled a lot and I was always taking in the architectural and design details. I spent my early work years doing youth ministry and having children. About 7 years ago, while living in Chicago, I started working for an amazing design firm, Amy Storm and Co. Upon moving to Houston, 5 years ago, we did an extensive renovation on our West University home. Through that process, I decided to start my own design business. We worked with an amazing contractor/builder (Melgar Custom Builder) who encouraged me to step out and start a business. Over the past 3 years I have had the privilege to work with so many amazing clients to help them redesign their homes. My passion is helping clients find their design voice and bring that to life in their homes in ways that are both beautiful and functional. I believe that art and beauty lives in every human heart. Interior design is an amazing way to bring that art and beauty into every home.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In a city like Houston, that is filled with amazing interior designers, it can be a journey to find your way and for people to know that you exist. I hired an amazing social media team (fun love media) to help me become more visible. The other more recent struggle has been time management. I still have three kids at home, and balancing home life and a growing business can be challenging.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an interior designer. I specialize in extensive home remodels and helping clients re-envision new home decor. I love remodels! It’s like helping a house find its way. So often homes are not functioning as best as possible. One of my happiest moments as a designer is watching walls come down and seeing a space take on new life. I am proud of the rapport I have with my clients. I am good at listening and asking the right questions that leads us collectively to a result that we all can feel proud of. What sets me apart from other designers is how personal each project is. I really devote myself fully to each project support the clients through every step of the process.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My best advice for those who are just starting out on the journey of starting a business or specifically an interior designer business is not to be afraid. Fear can be paralyzing and stops us from finding and becoming our best. There are always things to learn and missteps that will be taken, but all of these are opportunities for growth.
