Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Duarte
Hi Melissa , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
While I started drawing from Houston’s vibrant culture, my artwork truly evolved after the loss of my father in 2020. His passing due to cancer amidst the pandemic was an incredibly painful experience, but it also transformed how I see the world. I now look for beauty in the simplest things—nature, our differences as people, the unexpected harmony and color in everyday objects. This shift in perspective has been a key influence in my recent work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but each challenge has shaped my journey. Losing my father transformed my perspective, leading me to find beauty in life’s fleeting moments, which now deeply influences my art. At the same time, launching my LLC, La Flor 54, allowed me to combine my love for creativity and the emotional significance of flowers. Managing both my artistic path and the business has had its challenges, but these experiences have only strengthened my commitment to growing as both an artist and an entrepreneur.

I specialize in creating vibrant, bold art that blends pop culture, abstract elements, and unexpected color combinations. My work focuses on using familiar cultural symbols and playful compositions to capture the energy of life. What sets my work apart is its ability to take everyday objects or icons and transform them into dynamic, thought-provoking pieces. I’m proud of how my art encourages viewers to see the familiar in fresh, imaginative ways.
Any big plans?
In the future, I’m looking forward to expanding my reach as an artist by getting my work into galleries and connecting with a broader audience. My focus will be on continuing to evolve my style, exploring new themes and techniques, and finding ways to create even more impactful and engaging pieces. I’m also excited about collaborating with other creatives and seeing how my work resonates in new spaces. These next steps will help me grow both artistically and professionally, bringing my art to a larger audience.
