Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Becerra.
Hi Mia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For as long as I can remember, I have been drawing. Every time I would find a sheet of paper I would just begin doodling whatever came to my mind. I began with drawing what looked like stick figures to now drawing things that actually have different shapes and meanings. Although I still have a lot to learn and a lot to experience since I’m only 14 years old, I feel confident in what I create.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The only struggle I’ve encountered in my 14 years was recently in 2020 when COVID was first introduced to the world. Prior to that, I was excited because I had many opportunities waiting for me. Not only was I starting middle school, I was going to be taking my first art class. I only attended the first few classes before the lockdown began. I made new friends and caught up with old ones, but being in lockdown became lonely and very boring. I did continue to draw, but did look forward to learning more from my teachers and friends which COVID made difficult to do.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
People recently started to request that I draw certain things for them and they would pay me. One piece that was requested was a portrait of someone’s son who had passed away. As I drew that portrait I taught myself how to expand my knowledge in the different techniques. Needless to say, when I gave this portrait to the grieving Mother she expressed how talented I was and was very grateful. At this moment, the piece that I’m most proud of is from a school assignment that was recently drawn. We were to draw a still life of western objects; such as, a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, and a cow skull. I won 2nd place! In the Art World, I believe everyone is set apart from each other because each person has their own style, techniques, and imagination.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First and foremost, I thank God for giving me this talent and for blessing me with all that I am. MY MOTHER!!! My mom has been and always will be my best supporter and cheerleader. Any time I ask her for supplies or any kind of help she is there for me and finds a way to help make my dreams come true. Without her, I don’t know where I’d be. My Grandparents who have expressed wanting to help buy supplies as well to make sure that I continue pursuing my love of Art. I also have other family members and friends that have expressed how talented I am. All of my teachers who have noticed my drawings and who have allowed me to continue drawing during any schoolwork downtime. And, thanks to my Mom and Dad bragging about my work, even strangers have encouraged me to continue in Art. I’m very grateful for everyone’s words, support, and criticism.
