Daily Inspiration: Meet Micah Malone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Micah Malone.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Micah F. Malone, son of the late basketball legend Moses Eugene Malone and Leah Nash, was born on May 19, 2009. He now serves as Vice-President of the Moses Eugene Malone – MEM – Foundation established in 2023 in Houston, TX. Leah Nash, Alana Valentine, James Walker and Sandra White (Moses’ close friend) established the Foundation in 2023 with Micah’s input and full support. Moses Malone, a Petersburg, VA native passed away September 13, 2015, while out of town at a golf tournament in Norfolk, VA. The Foundation was established to continue Moses’ legacy of giving back. The Foundation provides resources that promote education and self-fulfillment to student athletes. The MEM board is also dedicated to nurturing children through philanthropic giving, leadership development and volunteer service. We are hosting the annual Moses Malone Celebrity Golf Classic in Houston, Texas on September 12th at Sienna Golf Course to raise funds to support these initiatives.

Moses was a well-known beloved basketball player. Micah is also a basketball player for Heights High School, class of 2027 and a proud member of the Positive Black Male Association (PBMA) where his mentor Dr. Rob’s mission is dedicated to providing our youth the opportunities to reach their full potential.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been anything but smooth for Micah and his mother. Their journey has been marked by both triumphs and trials—some days filled with hope, others clouded by uncertainty. Micah’s mother states that she lives in a constant state of fight-or-flight, always alert, always advocating.

Ten years ago, tragedy struck when Micah’s father, Moses, passed away suddenly in his sleep while out of town. Micah was just six years old. The unexpected nature of Moses’s death left the family reeling—not only with grief but with unanswered questions about the cause of death.

Today, Micah and Leah both remain in the “discovery phase” of Micah’s own health journey. Each day brings new insights. Micah lives with the legacy of a father who was widely admired as a talented basketball player—a legacy that casts a long shadow. He has spent the past decade grieving that loss while also managing ADHD and other medical challenges that complicate his daily life.

Through it all, Micah’s story is one of quiet strength and ongoing discovery. And for his mother, it’s a story of unwavering love and resilience.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Micah is a proud student-athlete at Heights High School, where he began his journey as a freshman in the Class of 2027. Known for his deep love of basketball and his bold, competitive spirit, Micah stands out not just for his athleticism, but for his sharp understanding of the game and his confident approach to role-playing on and off the court.

His passion for basketball is matched by a resilience shaped through personal challenges, and his presence at Heights High is a testament to his determination and growth. Micah’s journey has also been shaped by the unwavering support of the coaching staff at Heights High School (headed by Ralph Barreras), whose played a pivotal role in encouraging him, keeping him focused on his goals and preparing him to stay mentally tough. Their guidance has been instrumental as Micah balances academics, athletics and leadership responsibilities.

Micah’s mother is an accomplished accountant with over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. A proud graduate of the University of Houston—Go Coogs!—Leah brings the same dedication to her professional life that she brings to her role as a mother. Known among her peers as a collaborator and connector, Leah has built a strong network of friends and colleagues. Her empathetic nature and commitment to helping others find their purpose and passion have made her a trusted voice in both personal and professional circles.

What Leah is most proud of, however, is the strength and love that define her family. Integrity is a cornerstone of everything she does. “I take pride in being honest. I do what I say I’m going to do.” says Leah.

Together, Micah and Leah represent a story of perseverance, purpose, and the power of family.

In 2023, with the help of a few very dear friends the Moses Eugene Malone – MEM – Foundation was created as a 501c3 to help students and student athletes alike find success. Our board is actively engaged in the Houston community, investing in our youth by spreading hope and fostering transformation through fellowship. Micah servers as the Vice-President on the Board and oversees the ideas created from our entire board. This year marks a special milestone as we have been able to extend our reach by awarding an additional scholarship to a graduating student-athlete at Wheatley High School right here in Houston. Previously 7 scholarships have been awarded to student athletes at Petersburg High School – Moses’ alma matter.

For the Malone Family, legacy is more than a word – it’s a guiding principle. “We continue to honor Micah’s father through the MEM Foundation.”

Micah’s involvement in the foundation reflects a deep personal commitment to preserving his father’s values and vision. His leadership marks a new chapter in the foundation’s mission to inspire future generations while keeping Moses’ memory and name alive in his own special way.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Micah loves to listen to various genres of music but as a child experienced intense emotions when he heard the sound of the flute being played in those Disney songs. Leah loves to vacation and salsa dance!
