Daily Inspiration: Meet Mykal Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mykal Jackson.

Hi Mykal, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My business started for me when I was in the seventh grade. My great grandmother taught me how to sew and from there I just took off. I had a boutique with my mother called Envy boutique doing shows all over Houston.I went to Hcc fashion design school to further my education in fashion design to network and have more experiences. I then branched out and became a wardrobe Stylist For a lot of Fashion Show/charity events in Houston working with Neiman Marcus, Saks, Bayou Bend, Royal Sonesta, Post Oak Hotel, Petroleum Club, River Oaks Country Club, Country Club of Potomac, and Duchesne Academy.
From there, I started doing private events with Levi’s denim now to assistant tailor at their Houston Galleria Levi’s premium denim storefront. On this journey at Levi’s, I decided to tap back into my own designing and using my own platform to educate people about design and alterations, while also showcasing my work. I always say when you look good you feel good and you don’t have to break the bank to do so

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
If you plan on diving into a fashion career, you’ve got to go in with tough skin. You’re going to hear a lot more no’s before you hear a yes. There will be promises that don’t get fulfilled, and moments where you’ll face creative burnout and feel stuck—not knowing what to design next.

The competition is high; there’s always someone younger or newer with fresh ideas. The income can also be unstable, especially when you’re freelancing or just starting out. Breaking in and getting noticed takes real perseverance.

It’s also easy to lose your identity while trying to keep up with trends, especially with how fast fashion moves today. It’s okay to stay aware of trends, but always filter them through your aesthetic—make them yours.

The key is consistency and authenticity. People connect with brands they can relate to, so focus on being a brand, not just a trend. Trends fade, but a strong brand lasts forever. And remember—age doesn’t define success. Some of the top designers didn’t make it until their 40s or later. Believe in yourself and don’t give up.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a designer and alteration specialist who loves to educate people on style and fit. I’m known for delivering the perfect fit, detailed design work, wardrobe customization, and closet organization. I’m most proud of carrying on a skill passed down from my great-grandmother — one that allows me to bring smiles to people’s faces when they see their finished look. There’s nothing quite like wearing clothing that’s tailored perfectly to your body. What sets me apart is that I cater to all sizes and shapes. I’m here for everyday women and men, helping them show up looking and feeling their absolute best.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Oh wow, this list could go on and on.
The number one person I want to think is my great grandmother Lord rest her soul. She passed away last year November 7 at the age of 90. If it wasn’t for her, giving me the special talent that is becoming extinct. I have no idea what I would be doing today..
I want to think all of my clients who have been watching me grow since I was 14 Sewing. Taking my great grandmother old long skirts cutting them up into two skirts and taking them to school and selling them to my basketball team $20 a skirt.. so thank you to all my clients who has been watching me grow and still support me to this day and always recommended me to people that they know. There’s nothing like a word-of-mouth business.
