Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have loved drawing since childhood, but for many years art remained something personal rather than a profession. I moved to the United States from Ukraine after the age of 40 and had to begin a completely new chapter of my life. At that time, I spoke very little English, so building a new career and finding my place here was not easy.
I eventually returned to what I had always loved—creating art. I began painting custom pet portraits and opened my Etsy shop. This gave me the opportunity to connect with customers across the United States and turn my artistic skills into a real small business.
Today, I create personalized portraits that celebrate the special relationship people have with their pets. Every order has its own story, and it is very meaningful to know that my artwork becomes part of someone’s home and memories. Etsy helped me build a new life, earn an income through my creativity, and feel more connected to my new country. My journey has shown me that it is never too late to start again and build something meaningful from a talent you have carried with you your entire life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was starting over in a new country after the age of 40. When I moved to the United States from Ukraine, I spoke very little English and had to learn how everyday life and business worked here.
I also had to learn much more than just how to create art. Running an Etsy shop meant understanding photography, product listings, customer communication, pricing, packaging, shipping, and marketing. At first, every part of the process was new, and building trust with customers took time.
Another challenge was believing that I could turn my artistic ability into a real source of income at a stage of life when many people are afraid to begin again. There were moments of uncertainty, but I continued improving my work and learning from every order.
These challenges made me more independent and confident. They also taught me that starting later does not mean starting too late. With patience, consistent work, and a willingness to learn, it is possible to create a new path for yourself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creating hand-painted custom pet portraits from photographs. My goal is not simply to reproduce an image, but to capture the animal’s personality, expression, and the emotional connection it has with its family. I work closely with each customer, carefully studying their photographs and listening to the details that make their pet unique.
Many of my portraits are created as meaningful gifts or as memorials for beloved pets who have passed away. I am especially proud when customers tell me that the finished portrait truly feels like their pet and brings back warm memories. Knowing that my artwork can comfort someone or become a treasured part of their home is the most rewarding part of my work.
What sets my work apart is the personal attention I give to every portrait. I carefully adjust the pose, composition, colors, and small details to create an image that feels both realistic and artistic. Through my Etsy shop, I have had the opportunity to create portraits for customers across the United States, and every order is made individually with care rather than produced as a standard product.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe the custom art industry will become even more digital and accessible over the next five to ten years. Customers will continue discovering artists through online marketplaces and social media, making it possible for independent creators to work with people across the country rather than only within their local communities.
At the same time, AI-generated images and mass-produced personalized products will become more common. Because of this, I think authentic, artist-made work will become even more meaningful. Customers will increasingly value the personal connection with the artist, the creative process, and the knowledge that their portrait was made individually rather than generated instantly.
I also expect greater demand for highly personalized and emotionally meaningful artwork, especially pet memorials and family keepsakes. Technology may help artists communicate with customers, prepare compositions, and manage their businesses more efficiently, but the human attention, interpretation, and care behind the finished artwork will remain essential.
