Daily Inspiration: Meet Nick Connors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Connors.

Hi Nick, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I used to attend the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club. It was there that I found myself in the gym singing all the time at the top of my lungs while everyone else played basketball. The branch director took notice of my love for music and invited me to sing the national anthem on two occasions. I sang for both a spaghetti luncheon and gala event and was very well received. From then on I began singing the anthem for many fundraisers and organizations including all the major Houston sporting venues. After around two years, I stopped singing the anthem due to the voice change. I was being coached through the change while simultaneously attending the School of Rock in Webster Texas. At the School Of Rock, I became musically diverse and formed a successful local cover band called Nick and the Groove. The band went viral on Reddit and Facebook covering both Barracuda by Heart and Tennessee Whiskey after just the first two gigs. That opened the door for us as a young band with an age range of 15-18 at the time. We immediately became busy playing paid gigs every weekend. It was with the band’s viral video of Tennessee Whiskey that a publisher in Nashville noticed me and reached out. Not long after, they reached out, I signed a publishing deal with Eclipse Music Group for both publishing and artist management. I also signed a booking deal with William Morris Agency (WME) after one of my first Nashville gigs. So for the past three years now, I have split my time between Houston and Nashville. I write, record, and gig for a living and I am so blessed to be doing so. I am currently working on getting those hit songs.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road for me has definitely had some pretty rough patches. One of the biggest and reoccurring problems I’ve had along the way is agreeing to things I don’t agree with. Especially when it comes to my music. I would go along with what others said on pretty much everything just to avoid any kind of tension. It took a toll on me for a while because I felt voiceless. In the last several months though I have built the courage to stand up for myself. By doing so, it really has taken a weight off my shoulders. One other obstacle I should mention is the major lack of self-esteem I dealt with. Mainly due to social media and comparing myself to others, I felt an overwhelming sense of worthlessness. It took a lot of time, patience, and the help of family members but I am doing much better now. I’m way more confident and am realizing my skills and talents. I’ve had plenty more difficulties on my journey through life so far, but the ones mentioned are the top for me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional musician singer-songwriter. I’m primarily the best and most known for my singing. I split my time between Houston and Nashville. When in Houston, I’m performing live shows in an acoustic duo and professional wedding band. I also song write via zoom. When I’m up in Nashville, I do songwriting sessions and record in the studio.

I’m most proud of the growth in my voice and my artistry in general. I would say that my vocal ability to adapt to different genres of music and still sound good is what makes me different from others.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I would say to anyone starting out, don’t be afraid to voice your opinion when it comes to your artistry. You gotta put your foot down for what you do and don’t wanna hear.

At the beginning of my career, I wish I knew that it isn’t okay to just go along with other people’s opinions of what a song of yours should sound like. As a creative, you gotta do what feels right to you over what anyone else thinks when making your own music.
