Daily Inspiration: Meet Robyn Freefield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Freefield.

Hi Robyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always wanted to be an artist. Way back when I was a child, I swore that I would be an actor or maybe even a writer. As I got older, I developed this shyness that caused me to be afraid of stages/being on camera, so that killed my acting dream, but I was dedicated to being an artist still. When I was 15, I became interested in painting. My early work was awful. Though I came off as a wannabe Basquiat, I kept at it and constantly worked to find my own style. It finally came into my own around 2018, but I still find myself unsatisfied. Painting isn’t enough for me; I want to create a whole world and that’s why I’ve moved over to film as of lately. So far, I have a handful of screenplays ready, and as soon as COVID-19 is wiped out, I plan on filming them back to back. My years of painting have given me an eye for beautiful imagery, and I truly believe that’ll help me once I get behind the camera. I want to create images that stay in your mind for months on end.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I’m always in my head. I drift around my own little world and a lot of the time, that leaves me dissatisfied with reality. On top of that, I’m a perfectionist and if I don’t feel like something lives up to my personal standards will drop it and move on—That’s why I have so few paintings I’m always trashing the ones that don’t appeal to me. I think last month I trashed around eight unfinished works? I couldn’t stand having them around anymore. As of lately, I’ve been struggling with having a lack of inspiration. Everything has been boring me lately, but hopefully, I’m able to come out of this state soon and start working on projects I can truly be proud of.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a painter for the most part, but hopefully, by the end of next year, I’ll be able to call myself a filmmaker because I’m a filmmaker who hasn’t actually made any films. As far as my paintings go, I would consider myself a mixed media pop artist. We live in an image-focused world where we are constantly begin bombarded with new photos and videos on our phones 24/7, and I feel like it’s gotten to the point where we don’t appreciate them anymore. So basically, what I’m doing is taking a group of images and putting them together, forcing you to analyze their individual meaning and then find ways to make each one connects with the other… Juxtaposition ya know?

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I want to be a modern renaissance man. So, expect much more work from me in all types of media. It could be film, photography, clothing, maybe even music, whatever allows me to express myself the best at that particular moment.
