Daily Inspiration: Meet Sam Malone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Malone.

Hi Sam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
This month is my 35th year in radio. Got started working in my hometown of Philadelphia on a morning show earning a whopping $6/hour. It took a few years before I was hosting my own show in Sarasota, Florida. Then, it off to Buffalo. In ’93, I was hired to take over the morning show at 104 KRBE. The ratings blew up! That led to Clear Channel hiring me away for Talk Radio in ’05. In ’06, a client asked for help making a video. That led to my other career in marketing/media. I opened up 512 New Media in 2014. We are Houston’s leading marketing/content creation company. Our clients LOVE the media insight for their marketing platforms. #Blessed

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth? HAHAHAHA!!! Not in media. I was fired six weeks before my wedding in Sarasota in 1990. And then released from my contract for a “New Direction” at a radio station in 2012. Radio/TV is a very unstable career. Better have a very supportive spouse and a backup plan if your dream is broadcasting. Luckily, I was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall Of Fame in 2017. So the hard work paid off. As far as starting up my own media company, that was also difficult. In July of 2015, the phone never rang… for 31 straight days. There were no emails about new business, either. That all changed on August 1st of that year.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
On the radio, I’ve tried to be an entertainer. Keep it funny, upbeat and shareable. I was also blessed to have THE GREATEST SIDEKICK EVER… MARIA TODD!!!!! For 512 New Media, my goal is to deliver high-quality production at a great price, with magnetic customer service!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Our niche at 512 New Media is Crisis Marketing. I often speak to companies all over America about: “Marketing At The Intersection Of Media & Crisis.” I actually take my experience from a merit badge I earned as an Eagle Scout. Emergency Preparedness educated Scouts on what to do when all heck breaks loose. I combine that with my 35 years in Media… and we have quite a few valuable lessons and procedures. It’s amazing how many car dealerships, restaurants, and retail outlets never had a “Plan B” for operations.
