Daily Inspiration: Meet Savar Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savar Martin. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Savar Martin

Houston-born drummer, Savar Martin, grew up between two worlds: his family’s deep ties to music and the years he spent performing in churches. Savar’s gift of playing drums by ear and a perfect pitch set him apart at an early age. His style is diverse and unique, as he performs genres such as gospel, jazz, rock, pop, and hip-hop.

Savar is a charismatic player. His expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer. He’s an intricate and heady drummer who thinks compositionally but continuing to use his God-given gift and instincts towards the end result, whether performing live or a studio production. Savar brings the unfailing ability to adapt and find creative ways to interpret an array of music genres. He devotes a substantial portion of his time to other artists’ projects and new collaborations.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being in the Music Business it can be an Up and Down process. I experienced the downside of this business, specifically during the pandemic. Not knowing where your next performance, recording, and most importantly, how you will survive financially during this time. It was pretty rough. I returned from touring on the road with Scarface Feb. 2020; the Pandemic started Mar. 2020. Unbelievable! Business was slow for a while, but I remained patient and started to venture out. Elaborating and focusing on establishing my brand, also just simply keeping the Musical Chops up. Soon, things started to open up. I’m back to recording and playing more at different venues. One of the albums I recorded last year got me my 3rd Grammy Nomination this year! So, although we suffered for a little while, the end result was the Greatest Musical achievement you could ever get. That’s the Upside of it ALL

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional drummer, and I have played on numerous stages of major artists. Such as live performances with Bun B (2022 H-Town Takeover; 2023 Southern Takeover) Scarface and studio sessions with George Clinton. I have played The David Letterman Show with LL Cool J and toured with Devin The Dude, Dwele, Ron Isley, and a list of major and local artists.

What sets me apart is that I literally hear every instrument when I play. I’m a drummer, and I know I play drums. However, I try to feel every instrument for what it is. Get in the Groove & lock in! I grew up around a lot of Hip Hop/R&B music, and I feel like I’m the perfect hip-hop drummer. I hear the music & play it totally different from any other drummer I’ve encountered. I’m known for my skillful pocket that I set in the middle of Grooves.

I am absolutely proud of myself. I’ve grown so much, not only as a musician but as a Person.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I beat my mom’s pots & pans with the cardboard from the pants hangers, and I made beats. I would literally make a beat on anything around. I would listen to various genres of music gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and Rock/Heavy Metal. My Mom & Dad are both musicians & and singers. My Mom, Mary Martin-Ferguson, was my 1st Music Director (MD). She would sing, play the organ & direct the choir all at the same time! She would always push me to play my best. My Dad bought me about two or three play drumsets between the ages of 3-6 years old. I would bust one side, then flip them over and play the other side until both side were gone. My Mom then told my dad not to buy me anymore play drumsets. He needs a real drumset! He bought me that drumset, and I began to play at my church, which was actually my 1st time playing out anywhere in public. From that Sunday morning, it has molded me into the musician that I am. My family and friends always knew that I would become a professional drummer even though I could have played football as well. I was pretty good at it, too! I was torn between football & music. I began to travel with different stage productions around 14 or 15 years old. That is when traveling with multiple artists began. During those times when I was not traveling, I also began playing and traveling with local groups and playing at various local and surrounding area venues. I’ve been rocking with multiple Artists ever since!
