Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Sofer.
Hi Scott, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am the bassist and founder of The Moment. A 9 piece event band based in my hometown of Houston. The band started in 2018 shortly after I attended my sister’s wedding. I was surrounded by my closest friends and family and the band was rocking out! They were having fun, and the guests were too as they danced throughout the evening. I reached out to the most talented musicians I had in my network from bands I was performing in and from promoting shows through my former non-profit, Charity Gigs. I shared my vision for an event band and fortunately for me they were in-thus The Moment was born! The whole vibe of playing music for a celebration is way different than playing in local bars/clubs. I have played in all different types of bands at venues across the country starting at my first bar gig in high school at Zelda’s (downstairs Fitzgerald’s). It is a great feeling to perform at an event. So much planning and so many moving parts contribute to making it a success. When you’re doing soundcheck and seeing all the vendors load in and watching this empty ballroom transform into this beautiful space. All this buildup and excitement and energy, I thrive on that. And the best part, I get to do all that with some of the coolest, most talented musicians. It takes work to be in a great band, and they have been so dedicated. I feel fortunate to be performing alongside them.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Like most businesses, Covid was a major obstacle. We were really getting the ball rolling when the pandemic hit but now it is (mostly) smooth sailing! At first learning a variety of songs was a challenge. There are so many great songs across all genres that I wanted to learn. “Uptown Funk”, “Sweet Caroline”, “All Night Long”, etc. Most events are 4 hours, which is roughly 50-60 songs. Once we had the first 20 or so the rest came easy. Now we are in the 100+ range.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Moment is a nine piece band: two singers, guitar, bass, drums, keys, and three horns (sax, trumpet, trombone) which performs at weddings, corporate and charity events, anniversaries, and milestone birthday celebrations. We cover a wide range of music from Sinatra to James Brown and 80s to Beyoncé. What sets us apart is we offer a more personalized experience as we speak directly with the client to better understand their needs. We want to know the songs they want to hear. What are their favorites? We are also happy to learn any special requests.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Music brings me happiness. It has always been a huge part of my life. From getting my first bass when I was 14, performing in tons of bands, to earning a degree in Music Management, working for a music producer in LA, to now leading a nine piece band. All my experience on and off the stage has led me to this Moment!
