Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanetra Strickland.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Shanetra Strickland and I am the owner of Heaven Scent Candles & Co. I have always had a love for candles and to be able to sell something I created for others to also fall in love with, I really wanted to do. When I started HSC, I was a stay-at-home mother juggling the stress of postpartum along with the struggles of being a new mom. Candle making really became my outlet and turned into something I truly enjoyed.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a business owner has never been easy. I started my business at a very chaotic time in my life. I was a new mom and a new wife and I wanted to create something that I would be proud of. Business wasn’t always booming of course, but I took those blows and found the positives in them.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am working at an elementary school as a Teacher’s Aid until I receive my degree. I currently attend the illustrious Texas Southern University majoring in General Studies where I plan to specialize in Special Education. I am most proud of my perseverance. There have been so many setbacks and discouraging moments in my life where I could’ve given up. I am so proud of myself for pushing through the storm even when I couldn’t see the end of the rainbow. What sets me apart from others is my ability to multitask. I have never been a person to do one thing at a time. I am currently working full time, managing a small business, going to school full time and maintaining honors, while also being a mother and a wife.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is defined as your time. It took me a long time to see that all things don’t come to you when you want them and that’s okay! I used to always look at others and their accomplishments and say “I wish I was there” or “I wish that was me” and I have learned that success is not about right now. Success is about that right moment coming to you exactly when it’s meant for you.
