Today we’d like to introduce you to Simamkele Ludwala.
Hi Simamkele, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Gqeberha in 2003, and that’s still where I’m based right now. My journey into music really started in 2022 when I got involved with Soulcandi Music Boston — that’s where I began taking things seriously and understanding the bigger picture of the industry.
2023 was a quieter year for me. I was still working, learning, and developing my sound behind the scenes, but not putting much out publicly. Then in 2024, I officially debuted on digital stores as a producer, which was a big step because it marked the beginning of me putting my work out into the world professionally.
2025 was a turning point. I collaborated with a lot of artists, worked on multiple releases, and also started dropping my own music. That year really opened doors for me creatively and helped me build confidence in my sound. One of the biggest highlights was being selected as a Top 20 producer for the Back to the City Festival, which is one of the biggest hip-hop platforms in Africa — that meant a lot to me and showed that I’m moving in the right direction.
This year, I’ve started even stronger. I’m focused on building my catalog, developing artists, and creating full projects that have a real identity. I’m not just making beats — I’m building a sound, a brand, and a vision that goes beyond the music into visuals and storytelling as well.
Being from Gqeberha, I come from a place where opportunities aren’t always visible, so everything I’m building is from the ground up. That’s what drives me — to grow, to create, and to take this as far as possible.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of my biggest challenges has been a lack of resources. I’ve had to build everything from the ground up without consistent funding, which affects things like studio quality, visuals, and promotion.
Another challenge is not having a solid team yet. I’m handling most things myself — from production to marketing, outreach, and planning — which can slow down the process and limit how far I can push my work at once.
Being based in Gqeberha also comes with its own challenges. The industry isn’t as connected here compared to bigger cities, so opportunities, networks, and exposure are more limited. I’ve had to rely heavily on the internet to reach artists and build relationships.
There’s also the challenge of consistency while balancing everything. Staying disciplined, avoiding distractions, and keeping momentum without immediate results can be tough, especially when you’re building alone.
But at the same time, those challenges have shaped me. They’ve forced me to be resourceful, to learn multiple skills, and to stay focused on the long-term vision. Everything I’m building now comes from that pressure, and it’s what’s preparing me for bigger opportunities.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a music producer and mixing & mastering engineer based in Gqeberha. I specialize in hip-hop and its sub-genres, but I’m versatile and able to work across different sounds depending on the artist. My focus is on creating music that feels authentic, hard-hitting, and ready for artists to perform on.
What I’m known for is my consistency and my ability to create a high volume of quality beats while also understanding how to shape a record from production all the way to a clean, finished sound. I don’t just make beats — I help artists bring their ideas to life and complete songs.
I started my journey studying music production at Boston in 2022, and since then I’ve been building my catalog, collaborating with different artists, and releasing music independently. In 2025, I was selected as a Top 20 producer for the Back to the City Festival, which was a major milestone for me and showed me that my work is being recognized on a bigger stage.
I’m most proud of the growth I’ve shown — going from learning the basics to consistently creating, releasing, and working with artists. I’ve also started building my own projects and pushing my sound forward as a producer.
What sets me apart is my work ethic and my vision. I’m not just focused on making beats, but on building a long-term career, a strong catalog, and a brand that can expand beyond music into other creative spaces. I’m always learning, improving, and looking for ways to bring more value to every collaboration I’m part of.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always creative. I used to draw a lot and tell stories through my drawings — almost like I was creating my own movies on paper. Storytelling has always been a part of who I am.
But when I got to high school, I lost that side of myself. I got exposed to a different lifestyle — things like alcohol, distractions, and just trying to fit in. I kind of forgot who I was during that time.
Then in Grade 12, something shifted. I started feeling like I wanted something bigger for my life. Even while I was writing my final exams, instead of just studying, I found myself writing rap songs. That was my way of expressing everything I was feeling.
At the time, I actually wanted to study filmmaking at AFDA because I’ve always been drawn to visuals and storytelling. But financially, it wasn’t possible for my family. So my mother applied for me at Boston for a music production course — and that’s where everything changed.
That’s where I started making music seriously. I realized that even though I didn’t go into film, music became another way for me to tell stories and create worlds, just like I used to do when I was younger.
Now, everything I’m building — from my sound to my visuals — is really me reconnecting with that younger version of myself, but at a higher level and with a bigger vision.
