Daily Inspiration: Meet Stephanie Ramos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Ramos

Hi Stephanie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Stephanie Ramos, a Houston hairstylist, but my friends and family affectionately call me Nena. I am born in Fort Worth, TX, but was raised in Houston. The youngest among my siblings. A significant part of my childhood was spent in México, where my love for hair first took root.

From an early age, I displayed my creativity. Whether it was working with acrylics, painting, coloring, photography, clay, or arts and crafts, I was always eager to explore artistic pursuits. My parents recognized this passion and consistently supported my artistic endeavors. However, it wasn’t until high school that hair became a significant part of my life.

Despite being the self-proclaimed black sheep of the family due to my penchant for edgy haircuts and colors, the chance for me to experiment with my hair was very limited, especially outside of Mexico where it was more cost-effective. Nevertheless, my interest in hair continued to grow.

In high school, a few people asked me to cut their hair, and I discovered a deep connection to the craft. Though I didn’t fully grasp its significance at the time, I felt a sense of alignment with hair styling.

After immersing myself in various art forms during college, including film photography, a trip to Spain for digital photography, and an oil painting class, I found myself drawn to photojournalism. However, my academic pursuits took a turn when I discovered I was pregnant with my son after my first year. Opting to take a break, I spent a year as a stay-at-home mom, but soon felt ready to embark on a new career path, despite my uncertainties.

Feeling a strong pull towards the world of hairstyling, I visited Paul Mitchell the School Dallas and made the spontaneous decision to enroll on the same day, even as I was still processing the shock of it all.

My journey through school and into the professional hairstyling world was far from easy. I often found myself questioning my decisions and abilities. Nonetheless, I persevered and obtained my license. As I approach my eighth year as a professional hairstylist, the passage of time feels surreal, as if I had just begun yesterday. The long hours I dedicated to proving myself to others eventually took a toll on me.

Now, as a solo artist operating in my own studio for over a year, I find solace and joy in my work with clients. Specializing in curly hair while also enjoying creating bold fantasy colors and custom blondes, I lose myself in the art of hairstyling, finding fulfillment and passion in each unique creation.

I take pride in embracing my cultural heritage, ensuring that my space authentically represents who I am. I have a passion for diversity in hair textures and styles. I am dual licensed, this allows me to offer a wide range of barbering/ cosmetology services and cater to a diverse clientele, celebrating individuality and beauty in all its forms.

Reflecting on my journey, I recognize the numerous trials and errors that have shaped me into the hairstylist I am today.

In moments of doubt or uncertainty about my path and purpose, my mentor’s guidance echoes in my thoughts. I am deeply grateful for the diverse range of experiences and individuals I have crossed paths with throughout my career. Each interaction, whether positive or challenging, has contributed to my growth and development as a stylist.

I have honed my craft and cultivated a style that is uniquely my own. I am thankful for the journey that has led me to where I am today, and I embrace the lessons learned along the way.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
my hairstyling journey proved to be a challenge, stretching from my humble beginnings as an assistant to eventually establishing myself as a full-time stylist. Throughout this demanding time, I encountered a series of setbacks that tested my determination. Despite assurances from salon owners regarding educational opportunities, these promises often went unfulfilled, leaving me to seek knowledge independently. Compounded by issues of inadequate compensation and the insistence that I shoulder the burden of childcare to pursue my ambitions, the road ahead seemed full of obstacles.

Moreover, the lack of support from my spouse at that time only added to the odds stacked against me in realizing my dream of success in the hairstyling industry.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m all about creating dope haircuts and styles that my clients love. I thrive on pushing the boundaries with alternative cuts and rocking bold, vibrant colors. Lately, I’ve been diving into the world of curly hair patterns, where I’ve made a name for myself. But honestly, I love mixing it up and not sticking to just one vibe. My game is all about bringing to life the visual dreams of my clients. My hair art is a wild mix—from those craving eye-popping colors to the ones vibing with classic blondes, edgy cuts, and curly locks.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My buddy Jin was instrumental in shaping me as a hairstylist. He encouraged my artistic independence and passion for continuous learning. Starting out as an assistant at the salon we met, I looked up to his work ethic and dedication. Now, he’s not just a mentor but also a close friend.

Megan, my mentor and salon owner, played a significant role in my development as a hairstylist. She not only honed my craft but also imparted valuable lessons about managing numbers and finances. Megan shattered the stereotype of hairstylists being starving artists, showing me a different reality. Even before I joined her team, she believed in me. Megan is a confident, badass woman who knows her worth.
