Daily Inspiration: Meet Sweetie Shumaker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sweetie Shumaker.

Hi Sweetie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I actually started out writing rap, hip-hop, and R&B music. But over time, I kept feeling God pulling me toward gospel music. At first, I resisted it. I would write one gospel song here and there, almost just to get it out of my system so I could go back to writing the music I was used to.
Then one gospel song turned into two, then three. Before I knew it, every time I sat down to write, what came out was a gospel song. Even when I tried to write about something completely different, it would naturally become a praise and worship song.
That’s when I realized I needed to stop fighting what God was doing in me and simply embrace it. Once I did, I discovered that I loved these songs so much more than anything I’d written before. There was a different kind of joy and fulfillment in creating music that glorified God.
Now I’ve found my lane. Writing praise and worship music feels as natural as breathing. It’s no longer something I have to force—it’s simply who I am as a songwriter.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say there was definitely a struggle between what I wanted and what God wanted for me.
Growing up, my view of praise and worship music was very traditional. Once I felt my self being tugged towards making praise & worship music I remember thinking, “Well, I can’t sing like that, but I know I can rap.” So I had to figure out how to use the gift God gave me in a way that still felt true to who I was.
I decided to take the same hip-hop, R&B, and rap beats that originally drew me in and turn those into praise and worship songs. And I loved it, because it felt like me. I wasn’t trying to sound like anybody else or force myself into a lane that didn’t fit. It was authentic.
I started making the kind of praise and worship music that I would actually want to listen to, the kind of music that would’ve helped me step away from secular music without feeling like I had to give up the sound I loved.

Back in 2022, when I first started releasing gospel music, there were artists like Lecrae who were doing something different, but outside of that, I didn’t see many people blending worship with hip-hop and R&B the way I envisioned it.
And there’s nothing wrong with traditional gospel music at all. I still listen to it everyday, that just wasn’t the lane God was calling me to. I wasn’t trying to fit in. I was trying to find the way God wanted me to use the gifts He gave me, and this was it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I actually relaunched my cosmetic line, Sweetie’s Angels, in February 2026 after having it closed for four years, and I’m really excited about that. It’s been amazing seeing it come back to life.
Outside of being a full-time artist, I’m also a Sunday school teacher at Living Praise Church Houston, so ministry is a huge part of my life. Now I’m balancing both, building my music career while growing my business and it’s been such a rewarding season because I get to express my creativity in different ways while still keeping God at the center of everything I do..

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice for anyone just starting out is simple: just start. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Try different things and figure out what sounds like you. You don’t have to have it all figured out on day one, no one gets it right the first time. Just keep going, keep creating, and most importantly, have faith. God has a way of revealing your purpose one step at a time. You don’t have to see the whole picture, you just have to be willing to take the first step.
