Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Powell.
Hi Theresa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Theresa but, I go by Reese. I am a 22 year old Beauty salon/beauty supply store owner located in the Dayton, Ohio area. Being in the beauty industry is something I’ve always knew I wanted since I was younger.
While I was in High school I got the opportunity to attend a career tech school for cosmetology. I was able to get finish all my hours need to become a cosmetologist before graduating! At 17 I was able to work in a salon as an assistant until I took my test. A few days after my graduation I took my test and was able to work in a salon full time !
I worked in the same salon for about 3 years before I got pregnant with my son at 20 I then knew I wanted more not only for me, but for him as well. After I had him I worked in a salon suite while I planned and slowly accomplished my dream of being a salon / beauty supply owner.
By the age 22 I was able to open my own Salon/beauty salon store.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Some struggles I’ve came across during this journey is losing people closest to me along with learn how to be mother at a young age when I still really didn’t know who I was yet as a person. Learning to juggle between personal life and business life was a tough transition that I’m still working on.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist. I specialize in natural hair care along with offering extension services while still keeping your healthy.
I would say I am most proud of just believing in myself. Being in the beauty industry can be very discouraging sometimes. Giving up has never been a option for me I’ve kept pushing and working even through the hard times to get to where I am today.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something most people may not know about me is that I actually have really bad social anxiety! Which has also been a challenge with having my own business, because of course you have to engage with others, talk to people about your business, and even talking to clients daily lol. It’s something I’ve learned to work with and that has gotten easier to deal with Over the years.
