Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Lankau
Hi Tim, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am an attorney by trade but have li g been in construction. Several years ago my partners and I began exploring construction automation as a way to address the housing crises and Hive3d is the result of that collaboration. HIve3d combines robotics, material science, and prefabrication strategies to build next generation homes and commercial buildings. Our goals are to reduce costs while building longer lasting, safer, and more sustainable structures. So far we have had promising results. We have built eight really cool homes in the past year at a disruptively low cost point. We hope to have 20 homes and buildings built by the early part of next year and scale rapidly after that.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not smooth at all :). Developing new technologies is always a struggle. In construction you are trying to mirror the precision of robotics with the inconsistent and chaotic nature of building with imprecise matieirials in ever changing outdoor environments. But we get better at it everyday.

I don’t think Hive3d is about me personally. It’s about a small group of team members and investors taking on a tough challenge to address a big problem for a lot of people.

What matters most to us is that we are building every day. Every time we build a house one more family has a safe, affordable place to call home.
