Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Farley.
Hi Todd, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My 20+ year career in the automotive industry began in 1993 at a junkyard doing entry level machine shop work and parts delivery. Then, moving onto new auto part sales & commercial parts sales, I learned the importance of the right part from the right source. I then got to see another side of the industry as a Snap On Tools Dealer working with plenty of shops in the Houston area. It was here that I quickly recognized how the automotive service industry could be improved; by singularly focusing on one make of vehicle. For Todd that quickly became BMWs and in 2010 Todd set out to begin his own business doing what he loved. He took his idea and opened TMJ Bimmers in 2010, focusing on BMWs – and over time – I expanded my expertise and added a few more German engineered brands like Mercedes, Mini Coopers and Porches.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the challenges of running your own business is learning that the fun stuff doesn’t always pay the bills. The specialty jobs and custom conversions, motor swaps, etc. that really established our brand with our initial customer base definitely establishes your expertise among the true enthusiasts, but it also requires a lot of research/trial and error/dedication and attention to detail — which can take away from the day-to-day work coming in the door. Getting where I am today required many like decisions where the financial health of the business had to supersede the fun stuff (and very time consuming) work. Putting the needs of the business and the needs of my team ahead of my own personal interests was initially a hard pill to swallow. But I learned everything by way of sweat equity in the early days versus business savvy. And now, I’d say that has rounded out for me and I have a clear view of what it takes to run a financially healthy & stable business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of the fact that TMJ Bimmers is known as a custom and specialty BMW shop. And as the BMW experts and we are a crew of true BMW enthusiasts. As such, we have the confidence to perform custom work that other shops would be afraid to touch on both the latest models as well as the classics. My team and I have built this business slowly and steadily on 5-start reviews with a focus on delivering quality work and creating raving fans in and around the Houston Metroplex. What sets us apart from other independent shops is the fact that a visit to TMJ Bimmers starts with a customized treatment plan based on each individuals current use of and eventual plan for their vehicles. If your plan is to drive it until the wheels fall off, we will advise you on repairs and services necessary for your intended use. Or, if you’re planning to only drive it for weekend getaways, or you plan to sell it soon — we’ll work together to ensure your vehicle’s service plan is aligned with your goals! Our focus at TMJ Bimmers isn’t to make as much money as possible or sell customers something they don’t really need. Our focus is to deliver a quality trusted experience and to make all of our customers feel they’ve been treated like family.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’ve been interested in anything and everything with wheels since he was three years old. Always a car nut, I began wrenching at 12 years old.
