Today we’d like to introduce you to Vikram Varanasi.
Hi Vikram, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello, my name is Vikram Varanasi, and I am the founder of HopeLink Initiative. I first heard about stem cells while sitting in biology class and I instantly became extremely interested. I did more research and I found that stem cells can treat 0r have the potential to treat certain diseases that I found some members of my family have (autoimmune diseases and different types of cancers). I also found that there is a huge disparity on the registry as people of underrepresented communities have an extremely hard time of finding a donor match. Thats when I decided that I wanted to do something to help this cause, so I decided that I wanted to start an organization to save lives of people struggling to find a match, especially for underrepresented communities. Through this process, I have added the aspect of fostering the development of young entrepreneurs through helping them acquire leadership skills while hosting drives, and now HopeLink has gone international and is growing exponentially!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road and there are still struggles with managing HopeLink. The biggest problem that I constantly encounter is fear of joining the stem cell donor registry. This fear usually comes from misconceptions as many people believe that they have to undergo risky surgery to donate stem cells, but that is not the case at all. In fact, all they have to do, most of the time, is give blood. Many people also have other fears that we try to address through our heart felt and emotional conversations. Another challenge is getting people interested to join and support the cause, but through social media, we gained a lot of traction and got a lot of student volunteers.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a student in Dulles High School, I will be a senior in the upcoming school year (graduating c/o 2027). I am interested in business, economics, and solving social issues through the use of my passions. I am the founder and CEO of HopeLink Initiative, a student researcher doing research in the field of stem cell donation economics, and I live in Sugar land, Texas. I believe my passion to create positive changes in the world and my initiative to make that happen is what sets me apart from other people!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe that risk taking is a crucial component of success. The biggest opportunities come from pursuing ideas that do not have guaranteed outcomes, but I believe that risks need to be taken carefully with a purpose and willingness to learn from failure. I made a risk when starting HopeLink. I did not know whether HopeLink would succeed or fail and I used up a lot of my time setting HopeLink up and trying to get it to grow, but risks must be taken if success is to be earned. I view myself as a risk-taker willing to try new things to create a good social impact and I am a very strong advocate for taking risks.
