Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Martinez.
Hi Michelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started in the fitness industry like many others. I was wildly unhappy with my appearance after having 2 children. I was tired of my own excuses and poor relationship with food so I decided to make the change. My first gym experience was once with a classmate in college who was a personal trainer.
So fast forward 8 years and I was confident that was how I wanted to get going. I hired a trainer that was assigned to the Marine Corps base I was affiliated with. It was an 8 week commitment that truly changed my life. While I did not lose the weight right away, it did set the bar for my career path. In 2015 I became a certified personal trainer contracted to Marine Corp Air Base Iwakuni, Japan. This experience, while hard, opened the door to entrepreneurship in a way that I did not know existed and I could not be more grateful for the time I spent attached to Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS). 4am wake up sessions with active duty Marines, Sailors and their spouses gave me a broad spectrum of personalities, goals and outcomes that shaped the niche I have settled into today.
Proven31 Methods, LLC. is now a one woman show that provides Strength Training and Nutrition coaching and mentoring to Houston, my home town. The best part, I have yet to reach my true potential!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth having is ever a smooth road. Success, much like lifestyle change, includes highs and lows, self-doubt and pockets of overconfidence. My first challenge came with my formal education. I have a Bachelor’s in Political Science from UTSA, which meant that I had absolutely no foundation in basic human physiology and anatomy. The average personal training certification is only the needle tip of information to get someone going. I wanted to TRULY understand my craft and so began my never ending journey of self education. I consumed every bit of education I could acquire.
Certification after certification, amidst moments of extreme frustration since there was no one for me to lean on for help with understanding exercise science content.
From there, the struggle was to find my niche in the vast opportunity within the fitness world. Did I want to work with athletes? Elderly? Children? or general population? I was lost and often spread myself too thin. You can’t help anyone if you’re helping everyone. To top it off, prioritizing my children and domestic obligations was challenging . I am an ambitious woman, and slowing down in my pursuit of a career often gave me moments of sadness. Was I doing the right thing? Were my children getting the best of me? The balancing act of entrepreneurship and motherhood is still quite challenging.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Proven31 Methods?
Proven31 emerged from the evidence based movement in the fitness industry. As an evidence based trainer and nutritionist, I don’t waste anyone’s time on fad or trendy movement patterns that serve no purpose. My goal is to guide all of my clients to become stronger, more confident and autonomous versions of themselves. So I am lucky to have been immersed in scientifically sound and practical exercise program design. I specialize in general strength training, most of my clients come to me to make a physical change and want to have fun while they do it. Challenge themselves to new depths and discover that being strong is sexy and there is a kind of reward that can only come from the sweat off their own brow.
I have now settled into Houston’s luxury market, offering personal training services at the elite Houston Country Club in the Tanglewood area on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays, I train privately in homes. What sets me aside from the other personal trainers in the area is my commitment to no BS training protocols and my practical knowledge in lifestyle nutrition coaching.
What does success mean to you?
I find that “success” is a moving target, if I do not own the moment and truly live my passion, I fear that I’ll never be satisfied. I make a living doing what I love. I wake up and go to bed thinking about my craft. I work in an industry where I can evolve, grow and continue to be challenged. I’m already successful. Success is the reality that I get to live out my passion day in and out.
