Eileen Figueroa of Sawyer Yards Creative Campus on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Eileen Figueroa shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Eileen, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
What makes me loose track of time is engaging in a challenging project from beginning to end. The project most of the time is related to art involving the community. The more challenging the project is the more loose I get, completely forgetting where I am, loosing track of time and just completely immerse on it and not wanting to come back to be myself again. I describe it like being on a different dimension.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a contemporary realist painter living and working in Houston, Texas. Originally from Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, I create colorful paintings that pay homage to my beloved homeland. My distinctive narrative style emanates joy and peace and expresses the vibrant spirit and atmosphere of the unique Caribbean culture. Picturesque landscapes, tropical birds and flowers, musical instruments, and farmers tending their fields come to life with contrasting yet harmonious colors and bold compositions. They draw the viewer into a world of enchantment. As the artist explains, “I am a storyteller, and I invite you to join me on this visual journey.”

Painting has been my passion since I was a child. The inspiration for my art comes from the vibrant colors and music that originate from my Caribbean heritage. My favorite subjects include ordinary people dancing in the streets and enjoying their traditional festivities, as well as musical instruments, exotic tropical birds, and farmers tending their fields. My artwork captures the most vivid and fond memories I’ve collected from my childhood in Puerto Rico. I want to share those experiences with viewers so they can experience the rich, diverse, and vibrant culture that is unique to the Caribbean.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Work has taught me few principles; to be honest, have good work ethics and be present every day to be able to deliver your best and be successful.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
In 2018 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), what a life changer this diagnosis was! My body all of the sudden was numbed, I could not use my feet and limited movement in my hands. My doctor told me “In a year you will be in a wheelchair not able to walk” . I was devastated with fear and pain. I remember telling him” I will see you next year around this time, and I am going to prove you wrong” next year ” I will be still walking” My journey began turning pain into happiness and fear into success. This is what I strive for everyday since that diagnosis in October 2018. Seven years later, today I am here I am walking, dancing and creating art with my hands. I keep myself ahead of the diagnosis, for one minute it changed my life forever for the better and I turned it into success!

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Different cultures possess a diverse set of values that can contribute to personal safety and well-being. These values while not universally defined as “self protection values” can influence individual and community behaviors in ways that enhance safety. The cultural value that I protect is awareness and respect – Cultural awareness fosters respect for diverse practices and beliefs, promoting understanding and reducing misunderstandings that could potentially lead to conflict or harm. This includes being aware of how cultural differences might impact risk perceptions and safety practices within a community or workplace. Respect at all times and see other cultures for what they are. In the art world you can see and experience great talent that help you see other perspectives.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel more at peace when I am in my art studio alone creating art, painting, sketching or just relaxing and listening to good music. This solo time brings me joy, tranquility and peace. These moments opens my brain for creativity and new ideas. Also the sound of nature brings me peace.
