Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Farris.
Hi Adam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hey ya’ll, a huge shout out to my family; without you, this would not be possible.
My Journey: How I Became the Man I Am Today
My name is Adam Farris, and I am an autism advocate, motivational speaker, entrepreneur, and the founder of Younique Abilities. My life has been shaped by challenges, perseverance, and a passion for helping others see ability instead of disability. Rather than allowing my diagnoses to define who I am, I have chosen to use my experiences to educate, inspire, and encourage others to recognize the unique strengths that every person possesses.
My journey began at a young age when I was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome. Growing up, my vocal and motor tics often attracted attention from people who didn’t understand what I was experiencing. Instead of encouraging me to hide from the world, my father taught me something that would change my life forever. Whenever someone stared or asked questions, he encouraged me to explain what Tourette syndrome was. He showed me that education could replace fear and understanding could replace judgment. That lesson became the foundation of my lifelong mission to advocate for others.
Years later, I was diagnosed with autism. Before receiving that diagnosis, I often struggled to understand why certain situations were more difficult for me than they seemed to be for others. Social interactions, friendships, and navigating the workplace could be challenging. Receiving my autism diagnosis gave me a better understanding of myself and helped me embrace who I am instead of questioning why I was different. It allowed me to grow in confidence and taught me that being different isn’t something to hide—it’s something to celebrate.
As I gained confidence, I realized my story had the power to help others. I began developing my public speaking skills and discovered a passion for sharing my experiences with audiences of all ages. Today, I have the privilege of speaking at schools, businesses, hospitals, conferences, community organizations, and disability awareness events. Through every presentation, I strive to educate others about autism and Tourette syndrome while encouraging kindness, acceptance, inclusion, and understanding. My goal is to show people that our differences are not weaknesses—they are part of what makes each of us unique.
In 2016, I founded Younique Abilities because I wanted to create something bigger than myself. My vision was to build a business that promotes autism awareness, celebrates differing abilities, and creates opportunities for individuals to showcase their talents through handcrafted products. My long-term dream is to provide meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with differing abilities while helping the world recognize their incredible gifts and potential.
Beyond my work with Younique Abilities, I have dedicated my life to serving my community in many different ways. I have become an entrepreneur, website designer, autism advocate, and motivational speaker. I also serve as the Chief Technology Officer for the anti-bullying nonprofit I’m Bully Free, where I use my skills to support a mission that aligns with my passion for kindness, mental health awareness, and creating safer communities.
One of the messages I share most often is simple but powerful: Make one person smile every day, then encourage them to make two more people smile. I truly believe kindness has the power to spread just as quickly as negativity. One smile, one encouraging word, or one act of compassion can create a ripple effect that changes someone’s entire day—and sometimes even their life.
When people ask me how I became the man I am today, I don’t point to one defining moment. Instead, I think about the many experiences that shaped me along the way. I think about the lessons my father taught me, the obstacles I faced growing up with Tourette syndrome and autism, the confidence I built through education and public speaking, and the incredible people who believed in me when I was learning to believe in myself.
Every challenge I’ve faced has become part of my purpose. Every obstacle has become an opportunity to educate others. Every setback has strengthened my determination to make the world a more inclusive and accepting place.
Today, my mission is simple: to help people see ability before disability, to inspire others to embrace who they are, and to remind every person they meet that everyone has unique gifts worth celebrating. I want to leave the world a little kinder, a little more understanding, and a little more inclusive than I found it—one conversation, one smile, and one life at a time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
of course there are struggles; with my business i get told “no” a lot whenever someone does not want to purchase something from my business younique abilities, or when I have anxiety at my job and I work at a very large big-box retail store so what do I do? I just take it one step at a time, and one foot in front of the other and take some deep breaths and remember to smile
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My name is Adam Farris, and I founded Younique Abilities because I believe every person deserves to be recognized for their strengths, talents, and potential—not defined by a disability or diagnosis. My mission has always been to inspire acceptance, celebrate differences, and show the world that our unique abilities are far greater than our limitations.
At Younique Abilities, I offer a wide variety of autism awareness and disability advocacy merchandise designed to spread kindness, understanding, and inclusion. My collection includes handmade leather patch hats, autism awareness T-shirts, keychains, ceramic mugs, bracelets, jewelry, bookmarks, decorative plant stakes, photo holders, pet-themed merchandise, and many other handcrafted gifts. Every product is created with purpose and is designed to spark conversations about acceptance while supporting a meaningful mission.
What truly sets Younique Abilities apart is that I am more than just a business owner—I am an autism advocate, inspirational speaker, and someone who has personally lived with autism and Tourette syndrome. I understand firsthand the challenges that many individuals and families face, and I use my experiences to educate others and inspire hope.
I also believe in focusing on what people can do instead of what they cannot. That’s why I use the term “unique abilities” rather than “disabilities.” My goal is to help shift the conversation from limitations to possibilities and encourage others to see the incredible talents that exist within every individual.
Many of the products I offer are handcrafted, making each item more personal and meaningful than mass-produced merchandise. Every purchase supports my mission of promoting inclusion, acceptance, and opportunities for individuals with unique abilities. When someone buys from Younique Abilities, they are not just purchasing a product—they are helping spread awareness and supporting a movement that celebrates diversity and empowers people to believe in themselves.
Beyond selling merchandise, I actively participate in autism awareness events, disability expos, community festivals, schools, and nonprofit organizations throughout the Houston area and beyond. Through public speaking, advocacy, and community outreach, I work to educate others about autism, Tourette syndrome, and the importance of embracing people for who they are.
My vision for Younique Abilities extends far beyond an online store. One day, I hope to open a physical storefront that will provide meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with unique abilities. I want it to be a place where creativity is celebrated, talents are showcased, and people are given the opportunity to build confidence, gain valuable work experience, and achieve independence.
For me, Younique Abilities is more than a business—it is my life’s mission. Every product I create, every event I attend, and every story I share is an opportunity to change perceptions, inspire acceptance, and remind others that everyone has something special to offer. Together, we can create a world where people are valued not for their disabilities, but for their unique abilities.
What does success mean to you?
Happiness: To me, happiness is feeling fulfilled, content, and at peace with my life. It is a positive emotional state that I experience in different ways, from quiet satisfaction in everyday moments to deep joy during meaningful life experiences. I find that my happiness often comes from a combination of factors such as strong relationships, a sense of purpose, good health, and personal growth. While I notice that external circumstances can influence how I feel, I also understand that my mindset, gratitude, and the way I interpret my experiences play a major role in shaping my happiness.
