Exploring Life & Business with Allie Mays of La Bella Vita Pet Retreat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Mays.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have had a passion for animals from a very young age, and that passion has grown into a meaningful and fulfilling career. In 2019, I received my certification in dog training, which marked an important step in turning my lifelong love for animals into a profession. Through my training and hands-on experience, I discovered that my true calling was working with behavioral modification. I found it incredibly rewarding to help dogs overcome challenges such as fear, anxiety, and reactivity, and to see them gain confidence and improve their quality of life.

I have always been especially committed to helping dogs in need of training and guidance. I regularly work with local shelters and rescue organizations to support dogs that may otherwise be overlooked due to behavioral issues. My goal is not only to train dogs, but also to help them become adoptable, stable, and successful in their future homes. Being able to play a role in giving these dogs a second chance is one of the most meaningful parts of my work.

When I first began offering board and training services on a small scale, I quickly realized there was a growing need for a structured, safe, and supportive environment where dogs could receive individualized attention. I understood that in order to maintain the high standards of care I believe in, I would need to expand. My priority has always been to provide high-quality care tailored to each dog’s unique personality, needs, and learning style.

I envisioned creating a retreat that would be different from traditional boarding facilities — a place where dogs feel safe, comfortable, and cared for both physically and emotionally. I wanted it to be an environment focused not just on supervision, but on growth, enrichment, and trust-building. My mission has always been to create a positive, structured space where dogs can learn, improve their behavior, and thrive, while also giving owners peace of mind knowing their pets are in compassionate and capable hands.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With any small business there is going to be challenges. However i kept my head up and kept moving towards my goal.

We’ve been impressed with La Bella Vita Pet Retreat, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We offer a full range of services including pet boarding, doggy daycare, and professional dog training. My primary area of specialization is behavioral modification and service dog training. I work closely with each dog to address specific behavioral challenges such as anxiety, reactivity, fear, and obedience, while also helping service dogs develop the reliability, focus, and task-specific skills needed to support their handlers. My approach focuses on building trust, structure, and clear communication so that each dog can reach their full potential.

Our facility is located on 10 acres, which allows us to provide a peaceful, spacious, and enriching environment for the dogs in our care. We have large outdoor yards where dogs can safely run, play, and exercise, which is essential for both their physical health and mental well-being. This open space also allows us to create structured training opportunities in a real-world setting, helping dogs learn how to remain calm, focused, and responsive even with distractions.

In addition to the physical space, we focus on creating a calm and positive atmosphere where dogs feel safe and comfortable. The natural surroundings and beautiful views contribute to a relaxing environment that helps reduce stress, especially for dogs who may struggle in more crowded or overstimulating facilities. Our goal is to provide not only quality care, but also meaningful enrichment and training that benefits both the dog and their owner.

Overall, we strive to offer a well-rounded experience that combines professional training, attentive care, and a safe, enriching environment. We are committed to treating every dog as an individual and ensuring they receive the structure, attention, and compassion they deserve.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
When you are happy with the outcome.
