Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Baumgarten.
Hi Andrea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Colombia and came to the U.S. with my family when I was 8 months old. With very little money, my parents had a hard time establishing a home for us. That led us to travel around the states for some time, until we eventually settled in Houston, Texas. Growing up, our family experienced multiple hardships, including my father’s death when I was 9 years old. My father suffered greatly from depression and it is what ultimately took his life. At the time, my mother had little work experience and it was especially difficult for her to raise my brother and me alone. We relocated to Alief and it was there that I met many of my closest friends and where I grew into an adult. I’ve made it my life’s mission to help others facing depression and dealing with the hardships of life. With the guidance and support of my family, I was able to complete my undergraduate degree at The University of Houston, and my Master’s Degree in Psychology at Houston Baptist University. I am now married with 6-year-old twins. I am fulfilling my life’s purpose as a mother and as a therapist in my own private practice. I greatly enjoy working with adults going through the roller coaster of life. My mission is to help them work through these stressors and the emotions that follow. My hope is that with this support, I can help them achieve life satisfaction and healing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely been a bumpy road. Growing up in a single-parent household led to many financial challenges. As much as I wanted to help my mother and brother, I was undocumented until I was 19 years old. This led to difficulty getting a job and enrolling in college. I ultimately found ways to do so, but the experience wasn’t easy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a bilingual Licensed Professional Counselor, and provide psychotherapy to individuals all over Texas. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and am also trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy. I work mainly with adults dealing with anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relationship issues. I am most proud of the work I have accomplished with my clients and the success and healing I have seen in their lives. I want readers to know that I truly enjoy my work and that I would be honored to work with them. There is a large community of therapists in Houston and surrounding areas who are here to listen and help in whatever way we can. You are not alone.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is being completely genuine and authentic with my clients. I want them to feel at ease in our sessions. I want them to feel supported and understood. I want everyone, including myself, to feel as though they have someone they can talk to and count on during hard times. We are all in this together.
