Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Cameron.
Hi Angela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
What started as a passion for the wedding industry has grown into something much bigger than I ever imagined. I’ve spent more than 15 years as a professional hair and makeup artist and own Salty Skin + Hair, an on-location beauty team specializing in weddings throughout Galveston and the Texas Gulf Coast. Through that work, I had the opportunity to work alongside incredibly talented local wedding professionals and quickly realized there wasn’t a single platform dedicated to showcasing everything Galveston has to offer engaged couples.
That’s what inspired me to launch Married On Island.
Married On Island was created to make wedding planning easier while celebrating the local businesses that make Galveston weddings so special. What began as an online vendor directory has quickly evolved into a growing wedding media platform featuring real wedding inspiration, educational resources, a local podcast (MOI Talks), industry networking events, and community-driven initiatives like the Best of Galveston Weddings awards.
One of the projects I’m most excited about is the Galveston Bridal Expo. I saw an opportunity to create an experience that felt different from the traditional bridal show – one that truly represents the island, supports our local wedding professionals, and encourages couples to experience Galveston as a wedding weekend destination rather than simply a place to get married. The inaugural expo brought together dozens of local vendors and hundreds of engaged couples, and seeing our wedding community rally around the event confirmed that there was a real need for something built specifically for Galveston.
Today, my mission is simple: to help position Galveston as one of the premier wedding destinations on the Texas coast while creating opportunities for local businesses to grow together. Whether that’s through editorial features, podcast conversations, networking events, or the Bridal Expo, everything we do at Married On Island is centered around showcasing the incredible talent and hospitality that already exists here on the island.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not – and I think that’s true for most entrepreneurs.
Building Married On Island has meant creating something from the ground up without a roadmap. There wasn’t an existing blueprint for a wedding media platform dedicated solely to Galveston, so every decision has involved a lot of learning, testing ideas, and adapting along the way.
One of the biggest challenges has been changing perceptions. Many couples know Galveston as a beach vacation destination but don’t realize just how diverse the wedding experience can be here – from historic mansions and luxury resorts to museums, waterfront venues, and boutique hotels. Part of our mission has been telling that story in a way that inspires couples to see the island differently.
Launching the Galveston Bridal Expo came with its own challenges as well. Starting a brand-new event requires earning the trust of vendors, securing partnerships, attracting engaged couples, and proving the concept before there’s any history to point to. It was a lot of work behind the scenes, but seeing the local wedding community come together for the inaugural event made every challenge worthwhile.
Like any small business owner, balancing multiple roles has also been an ongoing challenge. Between operating Salty Skin + Hair and growing Married On Island, I’ve learned to wear a lot of hats – from marketing and content creation to event production, sales, and community building.
What keeps me motivated is the response from the community. Every new vendor who joins the platform, every couple who discovers a local business through Married On Island, and every collaboration that strengthens Galveston’s wedding industry reminds me why this work matters. We’re still just getting started, and that’s the most exciting part.
As you know, we’re big fans of Married On Island. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Married On Island is Galveston’s dedicated wedding media platform, created to connect engaged couples with the incredible local businesses that make weddings on the island so unique. Our goal is simple: make planning a Galveston wedding easier while elevating the businesses and people behind the experience.
Married On Island features real wedding inspiration, local venue and vendor spotlights, educational planning resources, the MOI Talks podcast, community events, and the Galveston Bridal Expo – bringing together couples and wedding professionals both online and in person. Everything we create is centered around showcasing what makes a Galveston wedding weekend different: the history, hospitality, coastal charm, and collaborative spirit of our local wedding community.
What sets us apart is our local-first approach. Every feature, podcast conversation, and event is designed to celebrate Galveston and the businesses that call the island home. Rather than trying to be another national wedding website, we’re focused on telling authentic local stories and creating meaningful opportunities for our vendors to grow their businesses while giving couples a trusted resource built by someone who works in the industry every day.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how quickly the community has embraced the vision. In a short time, we’ve built partnerships with talented local vendors, launched the inaugural Galveston Bridal Expo, created the Best of Galveston Weddings awards, and developed a platform where collaboration is valued over competition. Watching businesses support one another and seeing couples discover vendors they may have never found otherwise has been incredibly rewarding.
At the heart of it all, Married On Island exists to champion Galveston as one of Texas’ premier wedding destinations. We want couples to see the island not just as a beautiful place to get married, but as a place to create an unforgettable wedding weekend experience – and we want every local business to have the opportunity to be part of that story.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One thing that surprises a lot of people is that I never set out to build a media company or produce large-scale events.
My background is in the beauty industry. I’ve spent more than a decade as a professional bridal hair and makeup artist, working hundreds of weddings and helping brides feel like the best version of themselves. Being behind the scenes gave me a unique perspective on the wedding industry – I wasn’t just seeing beautiful celebrations, I was seeing how much talent, passion, and collaboration existed among Galveston’s local vendors.
The idea for Married On Island didn’t come from wanting to start another business. It came from wanting to give those businesses a platform they deserved. I saw an opportunity to tell the stories behind the weddings, highlight the people who make them happen, and create a stronger sense of community within our local industry.
I still love being part of a wedding morning with my beauty team, but these days I’m equally passionate about building something that benefits the entire wedding community. Whether it’s launching the Galveston Bridal Expo, recording a podcast episode, or creating new opportunities for local businesses to connect with couples, my favorite part is bringing people together and helping showcase everything that makes Galveston such an incredible place to get married.
