Exploring Life & Business with Apache Goudeau of Goud Teacakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Apache Goudeau.

Hi Apache , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started by going to the Military at 19 years old where I did logistics. After leaving the military I decided to try out for the football team at Texas Southern University I had no football experience at all but ended making the team. I played for 3 years and eventually graduated in 2007 with a degree in business. I worked overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan for 6 and a half years as a contractor doing logistics. I came back home and started a government contracting business that ran for a couple years. At that time my grandmother got sick and while I was nursing her back to health she made me my favorite dessert which is Teacakes. It allowed me for the first time to see exactly how she made them. I started making them quickly after and giving them to friends, and eventually it turned into a business. Goud Teacakes has been in operation since 2019. In 2019 I also got married to my wife Katia Goudeau and we have been married for almost 7 years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Their have many challenges along the way since starting my business. Being at the start a my marriage my uncle passed suddenly and I had to take care of my grandmother for 3 months and Both of my Grandmothers on both sides of my family eventually died in 2020. Then I got sued by my Uncle because my Grandmother gave me her home and I’m still dealing with this issue to this day. We opened up a business location in 2022 and it closed in January 2024. We learned so much from that particular situation that now we are restructuring the business model to reflect what the business will look like in the future.

As you know, we’re big fans of Goud Teacakes. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We make Teacakes if you don’t know what a teacake is it’s a sweet treat that is to be enjoyed with your morning tea. It started out as a crumpet in the U.K. and as it made its way through the southern region of America its name changed to a teacake. What sets us apart from the others is not only our square shape but our Teacakes taste like a cookie and a pound cake at the same time. What I’m most proud is that we have weathered many storms and we are still here. I want people to know that this business is built on the legacy of a great woman named Curline Kelly whose recipe will be world famous and she will be remembered for the teacakes she made for so many.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If you are just starting out become a master at what you do and the money will come. What I wish I knew in the beginning is systems make things operate more efficiently. McDonald’s doesn’t have the best burger but they do have the best systems in place for operating a restaurant.
