Exploring Life & Business with April Pomeroy

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Pomeroy.

Hi April, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Mitas opened in 2016 by the then owner Triasha Steward. She laid the ground work for what it is today. I bought the coffee shop from her in 2018 when Triasha and her family were moving to a different city. I have always loved coffee. Coffee for me was something that my family enjoyed together. It’s not unusual for find my entires family in the kitchen all sharing stories over a pot of coffee.

When I bought the coffee shop that was the feeling that I wanted to create….a feeling of togetherness. My heart was to create a place where everyone could come together no matter their background, skin color, political affiliations or religion. I wanted a place where the community could feel safe. Over the pass could of years, my staff and I have made it just that. It’s a gathering place for everyone.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggle is real! Making it through 2020 was tuff. I bought the coffee shop at the end of 2018 so all of 2019 I worked hard at getting it to where I wanted to be. Wow, 2020 hit us like a ton of breaks. My staff who had been with me from the start were all scared of losing jobs and I was scared that I wasn’t going to able to pay them. All of our roles changed. We became delivery drivers and begged our loyal customers to order things throughout the day. Somehow we found a rhythm in 2020 and started just taking it one day at a time. We would tell ourselves everyday that we were going to make it and be better for it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My husband and I own a couple of other businesses besides Mitas Coffee House. We also are owners of Pomeroy Ranch Equipment and Pomeroy Properties. My husband and I work as a team to keep them all running. Anyone that spends anytime around us know that we an unusual but dynamic team. Nick spends a majority of his time at the dealership and I spend most of my time at the coffee shop in town. Every once and awhile you will find Nick playing handyman at the coffee shop. We have a great team of people around us. we could not do what we do without the great staff we have.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in Tampa FL. I was a fun loving kid and wanted to be a country singer. As I got older I started getting a gypsy soul. I always had the need for adventure. I was good at calculating risk even at a young age. I always liked to try new things. In high school, I worked all kinds of jobs trying to figure out what it was I wanted to do with my life. I was always a good time. I loved my mamma so I never wanted to spend to much time away from her.
