Exploring Life & Business with Aziza Glass of Complete Animal Wellness and Longevity Medispa (CAWLM)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aziza Glass.

Aziza Glass

Hi Aziza, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.

There is a sense of pride in being born and raised in the historic Greater Third Ward. This neighborhood protected, encouraged, and cultivated me to be a successful African-American female veterinarian, an individual to never forget where I came from and to always give back. As a 3rd generation Third Ward resident, I saw first-hand how a small business can support the economy of the community, impact people’s lives, and help those in need. Because of these reasons, I am forever tied to this neighborhood and am committed to better the lives of the pets and people that I live around and the community where I live. Opening a veterinary hospital in the Museum District/Greater Third Ward was a no-brainer.  In fact, it was a necessity.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Accessibility. I didn’t have pets for the majority of my childhood and when I did, they were fish. It wasn’t until I attended Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) as a high school student in their Agriculture summer research program that I was exposed to Animal Science. I loved it. I immediately changed my future major from Civil Engineering to Animal Science and entered PVAMU a year later. While a student, I was exposed to great opportunities in Agriculture and related sciences. I continued to enjoy learning, watching, and thinking about animals. I wanted to extend my studies by going to graduate school, becoming Dr. Aziza.  I was so focused on becoming a research scientist that I never considered becoming a veterinarian. One day I learned that a couple of my professors (who also happened to be Black women) were veterinarians. It dawned on me: I could be one too. With the help of mentors, perseverance, and dreaming big, I set off on the path to go to veterinary school, eventually graduating from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

As a newbie veterinarian, I encountered a little of everything: toxic work environments, microaggressions, great learning opportunities, fascinating cases. Overall, I wasn’t happy. I knew the best path for me would be to create my own lane and space. Shortly afterwards, I started my first mobile veterinary practice. It was an amazing experience, but I continued to dream big and wished to expand. Eventually, I joined forces with two amazing veterinarians to open our new veterinary hospital, Complete Animal Wellness and Longevity Medispa (CAWLM)

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Pet owners consist of many different races, ethnicities, and cultures. However, the number of Black vets is less than 3% of all veterinarians. CAWLM Veterinary Hospital consists of three Black veterinarians who promote high quality integrative medicine in the Museum District/Greater Third Ward area. The uniqueness of the diverse cultural experiences of Dr. Huey Beckham, Dr. Keisha Burnett, and me bring awareness of the veterinary profession to the community and allows us to focus on preventative healthcare and wellness for owner and pet from trusted veterinarians.

CAWLM Veterinary Hospital is a three-doctor full-service veterinary practice that provides personalized and integrative healthcare services for pets. Its mission is to provide a friendly and caring environment that fosters an atmosphere of trust between the staff and clients. This mission supports the clinic’s goal of promoting complete animal wellness and extending the lifespan of pets through innovative care while improving the human-animal bond with education, fitness, acupuncture, and more.
