Exploring Life & Business with Bill Gierisch of Ride the Wind Stables

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Gierisch.

Hi Bill, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Bill started riding under Cowboy Hall of Famer Smokey Davis when he was 13 years old and worked with Smokey for many years training and breaking horses. Over his more than 65 years of experience, Bill has worked with thousands of horses and riders. Bill started Ride the Wind Stables over 30 years ago when he purchased an old cotton field out near Needville, TX. Today he has a wall full of winners that he is always proud to show off.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While we consider horses a necessity for life – for many, they are a luxury so just like many things are in industry, ebbs and flows with the economy. A large portion of our business is based on boarding horses. Many times we are a stepping stone, teaching new horse owners the horsemanship and horse care that is necessary to have horses thrive on your own property.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Ride the Wind is a western riding and boarding facility located in Richmond/Rosenberg on 27 acres of land, 5 miles Southwest of Sugar Land and servicing Katy, Needville, Damon, and the Greater Houston area. We offer western riding lessons for beginners to advanced riders of all ages.

We have many families that board their horses together here and parents are welcome to ride their horses during lessons with their children. We are a diverse riding “family” that consists of children ages 5+, teenagers, college students, and adults. Our students successfully compete in Fort Bend County Youth Rodeo Association (FBCYRA), Texas Youth Rodeo Association (TYRA), Junior High Rodeo, High School Rodeo, and various play days. Competition is not required and many of our students and boarders ride just for fun.

We also offer full boarding for up to 44 horses. Please click our “Boarding” page to see our amenities and what is included in your boarding fee. Riding is always more fun when you have someone else to ride with – and we sure do have a lot of people riding every day!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Take lessons before you just go out and buy a horse. Many people think riding or caring for horses is easy but it is no small feat. So find someone you can learn from and learn all that you can. Ride different horses because each one rides differently and requires different skills.

Pricing:

  • Group lessons are $60 a person
  • Private Lessons are $75 a person
