Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Johnson

Hi Brittney, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From Saving Lives to Designing Dream Homes: The Journey of Brittney Johnson

For years, Brittney Johnson thrived in the fast-paced world of intensive care, making split-second decisions that saved lives. As an ICU nurse, she honed skills in precision, strategic thinking, and meticulous attention to detail—qualities that would later define her career in an unexpected yet deeply fulfilling way.

With a long-standing passion for home design, Brittney spent 15 years flipping, renovating, and building homes, mastering the art of transforming spaces into luxury sanctuaries. Eventually, she took a leap of faith, trading the hospital for high-end interiors and founding Host Home Designs, a firm specializing in elegant, functional, and timeless spaces.

Brittney’s unique background shapes her design philosophy: she believes that a home, like healthcare, should prioritize well-being, comfort, and peace of mind. Every space she creates is not just beautiful but thoughtfully curated to evoke serenity and sophistication. Whether crafting custom new builds or executing breathtaking renovations, her obsession with perfection ensures that each project reflects a seamless blend of form and function.

Her journey from critical care to luxury interiors is a testament to reinvention and the pursuit of passion. Today, Brittney is known for transforming houses into exquisite retreats tailored to her clients’ unique lifestyles, proving that true luxury isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about how a space makes you feel.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. As a trauma ICU nurse working during COVID, I faced some of the most challenging moments of my life. The hospital was an intense and often heartbreaking environment—patients were critically ill, resources were stretched thin, and the emotional toll on healthcare workers was overwhelming. Every shift was a battle to save lives, and the weight of that responsibility was something I carried even after leaving the hospital.

At the same time, the design and construction world was facing its own crisis. Supply chain disruptions caused major delays in material deliveries, prices for lumber and other essential goods skyrocketed, and labor shortages made it nearly impossible to keep projects on schedule. Builders and designers alike were navigating an unpredictable landscape, trying to push projects forward while dealing with setbacks that were out of our control.

Balancing both worlds—working grueling shifts in the ICU while managing construction and design projects—was exhausting. There were times when I questioned if I could keep doing both, but my passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces kept me going. I knew that just like in healthcare, where we create environments that promote healing, a well-designed home could provide comfort and refuge during uncertain times.

Those challenges shaped me into the designer I am today. They taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of creating spaces that truly enhance people’s well-being. Even though the road hasn’t been easy, every obstacle has reinforced my belief that meaningful design goes beyond aesthetics—it’s about crafting a sanctuary that supports and uplifts those who live in it.

As you know, we’re big fans of Host home designs. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Host Home Designs is more than just luxury interiors and construction—it’s a legacy. The company is named after my grandfather, Steve Host, who instilled in me a deep love for design. He taught me that every angle matters and that no project—big or small—deserves anything less than 100% effort. His passion for craftsmanship and attention to detail continue to inspire every home I create.

At Host Home Designs, we specialize in luxury, high-end homes, primarily in Houston Heights, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, West University, and River Oaks. Our signature style is not about chasing trends—it’s about crafting timeless sanctuaries. We create homes filled with natural textures, warm color palettes, and carefully curated details that evoke both elegance and comfort.

What sets us apart is our holistic approach to design. We don’t just focus on aesthetics; we create functional, livable luxury—spaces that feel just as good as they look. Every detail, from the layout to the finishes, is thoughtfully designed to enhance the way our clients live.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the fact that our homes are intentionally designed to stand the test of time. In a world where trends come and go, we focus on creating environments that feel warm, inviting, and effortlessly sophisticated for years to come.

For readers looking to build, renovate, or transform their space, Host Home Designs offers a seamless experience—from concept to completion. Whether it’s a custom new build or a breathtaking renovation, our mission is to design homes that reflect our clients’ lifestyles while maintaining the timeless elegance we’re known for.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe that taking risks is essential for growth, both personally and professionally. Without risk, there’s no innovation, no transformation, and no real progress. That being said, I see risk as something that should be calculated, intentional, and backed by strategy rather than just a leap of faith.

One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was leaving my career as a trauma ICU nurse to pursue my passion for interior design and luxury home development full-time. For years, I balanced both worlds—working long shifts in the hospital while simultaneously designing and building homes. Making the decision to shift my focus entirely to design was terrifying. Healthcare had always been a stable and secure career, while entrepreneurship meant stepping into uncertainty. But deep down, I knew that I was meant to create.

Another major risk came with launching Host Home Designs and committing to high-end, luxury homes in some of Houston’s most competitive neighborhoods like Houston Heights, Garden Oaks, and River Oaks. The luxury market demands perfection, and every project comes with high expectations. There’s always financial risk involved—especially with fluctuating material costs, supply chain issues, and market shifts. But I’ve learned that when you stay true to your craft, trust your vision, and deliver exceptional work, the risk is always worth it.

At the end of the day, I believe that the biggest risk is not taking one at all. The most successful people didn’t get there by playing it safe—they got there by betting on themselves, pushing boundaries, and embracing challenges head-on. For me, risk has been the gateway to living a life of passion, creativity, and fulfillment—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
