Exploring Life & Business with Chou Wong of milk + sugar creamery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chou Wong.

Chou, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was a practicing dental hygienist and my husband was an accountant. I was getting burned out in my career as I wasn’t feeling challenged or growing. When we first started dating, we found out we both had a love for ice cream. I would visit him in New York (where he’s from) and we always visited a particular ice cream shop. We once joked that one day, we could open an ice cream shop. Fast-forward to 4 years into my career and looking for a change, I convinced him to take a leap of faith, both with and IN me. We got to it and opened up milk+sugar in January 2019. And heere we are today, opened for 3+ years on the other side of a pandemic.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Due to the lack of mentorship, background, resource and network, we had to figure out everything ourselves. Navigating the Houston permitting process, being our own contractor and overseeing construction, testing out recipes, etc. Many stressful days with no one to turn to for advice, frustrated tears, the list goes on!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about milk + sugar creamery?
We specialize in artisan, small-batch ice creams with house-made mixins. We’re not going to offer classic flavors or sprinkles and candies toppings just thrown on top. We offer thoughtfully procured flavors with texturally balanced pairings like cakes, caramel, etc that we make ourselves. Many people don’t know the work that goes into making ice cream. On top of that, many of our flavors are two parts or more. I always aim to make our ice cream fresh, we don’t just make a bunch and store it for weeks. Each week, I estimate how much we’ll need to make so that each week, you’re getting a fresh batch. That’s why if we’re out of a flavor, we’ll be out until it’s scheduled to be made again. Not only are we baking, flavoring and churning, traditional hard-serve ice cream must harden for a day. It’s a lot of work! We’re proud to offer a full dessert experience located in a casual hang-out spot where customers come to catch up with their friends or to grab a sweet finish to date.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Simply by visiting our shop and trying us out. If you like us, invite your friends and show them a different experience in ice cream.
