Exploring Life & Business with Christelyn Nash of The Wavy Daisy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christelyn Nash.

Hi Christelyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2019, I had a wild inclination to host a community event that would invite artists who had been using the space to come together and share their craft. Thus, The Wavy Daisy Mini Music Fest was born. A group of friends and I re-organized my studio to accommodate music equipment, a stage made of four wooden pallets, and a temporary dance floor covered in glow-in-the-dark paint. We hand-made giant daisies to hang on the walls and used led light strips to frame every wall and surface. In addition to hosting artists for the night, I wanted to contribute some of my art. At the time, most of my artwork was digital, so I needed to take it off the screen and put it into people’s hands. I shared some ideas with my painter BFF, Ashley Farias, and we came up with the idea to put our art onto t-shirts!

Ashley and I have worked together in fashion for years. We met at my very first job when I was a teenager. Ashley and I instantly clicked one day while folding clothes at work when I asked her, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” She answered, “Famous.” Only someone capable of being famous would admit to pursuing fame. We had that in common. We also loved fashion, so it made sense when we decided to dive into fashion design together. While putting together The Wavy Daisy Mini Music Festival, we taught ourselves how to transfer our art onto shirts and hoodies. We developed a collection of streetwear clothing within a few weeks and launched The Wavy Daisy brand as a pop-up boutique during the festival.

Fast forward to today, The brand has made sales across Houston at local events, art markets, and online. Our customers are some of the most creative people in this city. We are so grateful for the support that The Wavy Daisy has. We are a slow fashion brand meaning it takes a little longer to release new collections than your typical fashion retailer. So every piece we create is made for someone who patiently waited to get their hands on it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The development process for the brand has been slow because there was never much urgency to push sales or promote anything. We make clothing as the ideas come to mind, so sometimes the brand goes quiet for a while. However, due to the accelerated interest in events post-pandemic, The Wavy Daisy has been far more active than usual. Because of the increase in orders and requests, it has been challenging to match the pace. In my opinion, this challenge means that the brand is generating value.

The Wavy Daisy team currently has two designers, myself and Ashley, and our assistant, Gigi. We are a mighty team of 3 committed to showering The Wavy Daisy with love and watching it blossom. Although the workload gets intense from time to time, we have not met an obstacle that we could not overcome.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Wavy Daisy is an inclusive brand for creative people who do not care what others think about them. We specialize in comfortable streetwear clothing that promotes positivity and individual expression. The Wavy Daisy is known for its vivid colors, taboo imagery, and references to historical peace movements in the US. The factor that sets us apart from other brands is the absolute randomness of each design we create. The combinations of painterly forms and cyber references have produced a unique perspective. Our clothing represents different things to different people. Our style speaks to the nature of art. We adore our creations because they are things we truly enjoy making and love sharing with others.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The Wavy Daisy has a beautiful family of supporters and creative partners that have contributed to our success. The Signs & Decor is a local event decor business that has played a significant part in how The Wavy Daisy presents itself at trade shows. They designed and built our first official wooden sign and have even manufactured some of The Wavy Daisy accessories and display stands. The Vybe Studio is a local creative studio and event venue that has hosted The Wavy Daisy on many occasions and provided space for our branding photoshoots. Our dear friend and volunteer, Humberto Trevino, has been the muscle for The Wavy Daisy, helping us set up electrical wiring and move heavy equipment and furniture at our events. We’d also like to take the opportunity to mention and remember one of our late models, Summer Chester. Summer was a kind spirit who brought so much radiance to the sets for The Wavy Daisy fashion shoots. We loved working with her because of her effortless beauty and positive attitude. Summer was the very first customer to place an online order when The Wavy Daisy launched its store. R.I.P Summer, we love you!
