Exploring Life & Business with Daija Cortez of Studio Satori

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daija Cortez.

Hi Daija, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My mother was adopted and brought to America from Vietnam as a baby. I’ve moved a lot as a child, just as much- or more, after serving time in the Navy. I moved to Houston with my daughter and hardly any income. I completely started my life over- and honestly, I feel like I’ve just started getting my footing.
I became a professional at going places by myself as I grew into learning about myself postpartum. Eventually, I found Pilates and soon, I decided I want to own my own studio(s). My fitness membership saved my mental health. My ultimate goal is to create a space for people who may not have anyone and is in search for community. I have big ideas for the people of Houston. I may be from out of town, but here is where I found home.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It absolutely has been a rough ride, and it still is sometimes. I had a bit or a rough childhood, plus an absent father. I moved here for many reasons, but mostly running from problems that of course followed me. Becoming a single mother may have been the cherry on top or the last straw, whichever. Moving to Houston with nothing made me seeing things I’d never seen with my own eyes- I moved 6 times within 3 years, and two of those times were cross country. It has been quite the journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Studio Satori started as a vision way bigger than fitness alone. It’s a wellness brand centered around community, and creating spaces where people feel comfortable, stronger, softer, and more connected to themselves.
My background is unconventional- I’m a Navy veteran, mother, content creator, former beauty industry professional, and currently pursuing comprehensive pilates education while instructing and building toward a long-term studio ownership. My experiences shaped how I view wellness- not just as a luxury, but as something that should feel approachable, restorative, and life-changing.
What sets my brand apart is the intention behind it. I’m passionate about experiences that blend comfortability with movement, warmth, and community. My long-term vision includes wellness amenities, recovery spaces, child drop off for class participate use, and thoughtful touches that make people feel genuinely cared for.
At the moment, I’m focused on deepening my pilates education, growing within Houston’s wellness community, building my personal platform through content creation, and laying the foundation for a studio that reflects resilience’s, softness, and growth.
I’m proud of continuing to build despite uncertainty. Building a business while navigating motherhood, career transitions, college, and entrepreneurship has required a faith, a ton of self searching, persistence, patience, and adapt. When the time is right, I hope people see Studio Satori not only as a future business, but as proof that it’s possible to create something meaningful from imperfect beginnings and sticky situations.
Above all, I want people to know that wellness doesn’t have to look one way. There’s room for ambition and grace, you just have to believe in yourself and your vision.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory are my family trips. As crazy as my childhood was, I do have several nicer memories of family vacations to Florida, Hawaii, and Arizona. Also, playing outside in the neighborhoods that I grew up in. I always wanted to be anywhere other than home, even if it was just outside. It was me and my bike, and sometimes the neighborhood kids against the world.
